Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 03, 2012 8:47 am Hi all, Im considering 2 hot water systems for our acreage design (instantaneous gas). Our design plans have the width of the house 32m with bathrooms at either end. It is impractical to place a single system in the centre due to open living space (ugly). So a single system would be placed at one side meaning a long wait for hot water at the far end. Just wondering if anyone else has put in 2 hot water systems in? Do people actually do this? Just wondering if it will be money well spent or not? I've no idea how long it would be to wait for hot water at the far end... Building McDonald Jones Bronte Manor One Contracts Signed Dec 12 DA Lodged Jan 13 DA Consent w/BAL40 Apr 13. (Acreage Design) 2Oct 03, 2012 9:09 am I definately think it would be worth 2 systems. 32m is a very long way for the water to travel OR Another option could be to research the rannai smartstart model. It has a preheat function. You press the preheat button and it takes 1-2 minutes to heat the water in the pipes. Saves wasting water. I haven't used it but we looked into both the smartstart and enviro models for this build. Rightly or wrongly, we decided the gas saving was more important than the water saving (we have 2 big water tanks to help reduce water) and went with the enviro. We have our kitchen, bathrooms and laundry on the one side of the house. It only has a distance to travel to the ensuite and it definately takes longer, although I haven't timed it. 2 Hot Water Systems? (Acreage Design) 3Oct 03, 2012 9:33 am Hi, we too have built on acreage and our house is 42m long with main bathroom down one end and our bathroom and kitchen down other end. On the main bathroom end we have gone with solar hot water system and other end we have instant gas hot water. We are about two weeks from moving in so sorry can't tell you how it is going but looking forward to not running out of hot water especially since we have three teenagers who love their showers. Re: 2 Hot Water Systems? (Acreage Design) 4Oct 03, 2012 1:36 pm We are having two hot water systems also as our house will be 28m long with the bathrooms at opposite ends - a solar HWS for the ensuite, kitchen & laundry and instant gas for the main bathroom. (Acreage Design) 5Oct 03, 2012 2:00 pm We have gone with two hot water systems and our house isn't even that long. Both gas. One unit will serve the ensuite, laundry and bar whilst the other unit will serve the kitchen and other two bathrooms. Our main concern was being able to use the ensuite shower whilst someone else was having a shower in another bathroom. Even if you've got a big system there can be issues with consistency - it worked out better for us to have two smaller units. Re: 2 Hot Water Systems? (Acreage Design) 6Oct 03, 2012 2:14 pm I would definitely recommend 2 hot water systems for bathrooms that are that far apart. Our Ensuite is about 20m away from the HWS. When you account for the "ups and downs" the water pipes have to take to service bathrooms, it is even further away. Without any "help" it takes ages (6min or so) for the hot water to come through. We have installed the Rinnai Smartstart as well and when using that, hot water comes through quickly after the Smartstart has finished. But it does take ~5min for the Smartstart to do it's work. However, the time it takes for the Smartstart might depend on the length of the pipe run? Another thing to consider with water pipe runs that are that long is that the hot water will cool down a little bit in the pipes on the way to the far away bathroom. We notice that, with the same temperature settings, the water in the Ensuite is noticeably cooler than in the bathroom that is right next to the HWS. With modern HWS being restricted to 50°C, you might find it hard to get the water to come out at the other end hot enough. The other downside of having the HWS so far away is that if you just want a little bit of hot water to wash hands or brush teeth, you can't get it quickly. It is worthwhile waiting 5 min before having a shower, but not if you just want to quickly wash your hands. We have installed a second HWS to service the kitchen and laundry. Otherwise we would never ever get hot water there. I will be definitely getting a second system now. Building McDonald Jones Bronte Manor One Contracts Signed Dec 12 DA Lodged Jan 13 DA Consent w/BAL40 Apr 13. S96 Consent w/BAL19 May 13.
