Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 03, 2012 7:27 am Our house is nearly done, the floors are in and all that is left to do is put in things like water tank, hot water unit, air con etc. Yesterday we went to inspect the house with the builder and we found out that someone had smashed a bedroom window and went inside and tracked mud everywhere. The builder had the window replaced and carpet steam cleaned but the whole experience left us a bit uneasy! Has anyone had that experience and have you had it happen to you more than once? we are hoping that once we move in, it would deter these things from happening. We are having our appliances installed after we move in. Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 2Oct 03, 2012 7:43 am If you trawl though my posts, you will find we had a whole house lot of windows removed in Mernda (they were installed). But the thieves were caught by an eagle eyed homeowner who spotted the vehicle and reported it to the police, she was here on Homeone! Clearly not as bad as you as no one ever came in at that point of the build but still frustrating never the less.. We ended up getting a surveylance sign just to deter them. This was with our very first build, once we moved in we were there for 10 years and it was fine. It seems there are just fools out there that see a vacant house and take advantage of it.. Hopefully once you are in that will be the end of it Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 4Oct 03, 2012 7:49 am oh my goodness! I will go through your posts to read about it but it just angers me that people would do this. Aside from insurance, how do builders prevent these misfits from damaging property? It sounds quite rampant from what I've seen and heard. I've also spotted my first tagging in Mernda outside the Woolworths. Sad. Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 5Oct 03, 2012 8:19 am Padams we are in Doreen currently (2 mins away from Mernda for those who don’t know) and unfortunately it seems there are too many teenagers with not enough to do around the area. Driving home down Bridge Inn Road the other day I noticed in that section at the back of Mernda villages (where all that new construction has started in the last few months and where they are doing all that road work) one house that is currently being built has surveillance cameras (I mean full on big cameras on a pole) set up at the front and back of the house. Once you are in I’m sure you won’t have a problem and this was probably just a case of bored kids on school holidays with nothing better to do (I'm not meaning to sound like I’m stereotyping all kids) you just have to go for a drive down Mernda Villages Drive at about 8 at night to see them all wondering up and down and hanging around out the front of Safeway to know they have nothing to do, they do it at the Doreen Safeway and shops too. Our car got broken in to at the front of our house over the last xmas holidays, we just put it down to bored kids also as much as it was annoying at the time. Smashing a window and wandering through a house though sounds like bored kids to me, just being so familiar with the area and having family in the area who run a business. Padams, try not to let this spoil any excitmentment you have for the area or your newly built house, once you are in I highly doubt you will have any further issues Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 9Oct 03, 2012 7:05 pm Hey UPC, is that the road where all the new display homes are going to be? That's probably why there are cameras around! We have a few neighbors that has moved in, so I feel better.plus the lot back of ours is going to start soon. Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 10Oct 03, 2012 7:29 pm I have heard that some builders are putting a tracking device in some items Its the pitta when things like this is happen,my thinking is that everyone works darn hard to be able to buy themselves things,my pet hate is stealing! They smashed the sliding door window and entered through trailing mud through the house (in the middle of winter) but didnt take anything (not that there was much to take as appliances hadnt been installed). When she moved in we also noticed that a window frame to the rear of the house was slightly damaged by someone trying to pry it open. Our builder said that this is very common in a lot of new estates (not just Mernda) and sometimes its even tradies taking hot water systems and aircons. Its bound to happen in areas where theres construction and nobody around. I had all fences (including side gates) installed before handover. I would suggest the same. As soon as your fences go up trust me you will be a lot more settled and calm about everything - i know my mum was. Dont let the idiots who did this ruin your experience - build a fence asap with a side gate and packlock it. Building the Oasis 27 in Mernda Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 12Oct 05, 2012 7:13 am Thanks Fuzzy, We are wanting to co ordinate putting up fences while the SS put in things like water tank, air con and hot water unit. I think you are right, once the fence is up, I'd feel better! We have houses that are occupied across the street from us but not on our side of the street, that's why they entered from the back. I know that Cragieburn has lots of vandalism when we drove through highlands but understandably, it has more occupants! I was just hoping Mernda Villages would be a bit different! Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 13Oct 05, 2012 5:58 pm Hey padams We had our place broken into numerous times during the build, pallets of tiles, spa bath etc stolen - even on the day before settlement our fly door was stolen! Touch wood it was fine after we moved in - a lot of times it is people stealing from a "construction site" not YOUR home! Even though it feels so personal. Our SS told us a lot of the time it is other trades people as they know the timing of the works and they don't look suss turning up with work gear on in a work van... Fingers crossed for you that you have no further issues! Luckily in the last 6 weeks there has been 4 houses move in including us and we haven't had any trouble at all these school holidays. We are going to see the house tomorrow, so will see if anything done again. A neighbor has moved in two lots over, so feel a bit better! Re: Before handover, window smashed and entered house ! 16Oct 07, 2012 7:34 pm I saw i-detect.com.au surveillance system used in our estate by the developer in few areas.
