Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 02, 2012 12:10 am We have asked our builder for recessed sills for the back sliding doors - there are 3 sets of sliding doors which cover our whole back of house. However at the same time plan to have wood floors in this area... normally there would be a small wood border which rests against the sill so the wood can expand and sit... what happens if I' don't have a sill there? Do I need to just have the wood border? I'm thinking this then defeats the purpose of paying for no sill... All comments appreciated Re: Recessed sills and wooden flooring 2Oct 02, 2012 6:59 am Hmm this has me wondering too We too have recessed slabs for our stackers and french doors but where there is floorboard we have paid extra to have no beading but I'm still wondering now what will they put there. Might and check out one of their display home and hope I can find one with wood and recessed slab or get hubby to ask ss. Surely this has come up before. Re: Recessed sills and wooden flooring 3Oct 02, 2012 9:35 pm Had a look through a display home today, I think it was a plantation one and they had wooden floors with recessed sills and they had a silver strip there exactly like what they put down when carpet meets tile or floorboard. I'm thinking that's what we will have because we are not having the beading. I should have rememberd to take a pic Re: Recessed sills and wooden flooring 4Oct 06, 2012 6:52 pm Hi TashnStu77 I had pre-start this week and big learning curve. Here's what I've heard: The builder said the recessed sills won't be fully recessed they have to be at least the thickness of the wood floor which is 15mm (floor + glue). I guess that's OK since it'll still look open, and it allows for the wood trim to sit well against the sill. The guy selling me the wood floors said they can also reduce the trim down to 8mm if needed. But I think I'll stick with 15mm as otherwise my wood floor could look higher than the 8mm sill and it'll be a bit silly probably (hard to visualise). The beading I understand goes into where the floor is laid after skirting. If you can get the skirting laid after the floors are laid then I don't think it's needed (and it looks better I think anyway). The wood trim is different and needed wherever the wood floor hits another surface e.g. tiles, carpet, glass doors. Plasterboard Gyprock is very popular as a reveal liner these days. You need to provide a way of supporting it, we use a modified timber reveal or bracket.
