Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 29, 2012 11:55 am Hi all, we're at the visualisation stage for the home we are planning to build, and we've come across a source of recycled building material that we want to tap into before it dries up... the only problem is, we don't have a house plan yet, so we aren't sure about whether or not we can use this stuff for the build. We also haven't settled on a builder yet, otherwise we would just ask for their advice. We've found some steel I-beam (don't know how heavy they are, but they are 25cm high), and I would love to use it instead of the exposed LVL beams that we were planning to use. I want the ceiling to have exposed beams, with recycled tongue & groove timber above the beams. The house will be 15 X 7, with a 5 mt deck = total roof area would be 15 X 12 maximum. The deck could be narrower - 2.5 mt wide at a minimum - if it had to be. I need to know what kind of engineering is required to be able to use this steel... like, how long can a span be, and what kind of support do they need? In my imagination, I'm seeing three beams spanning the width of the house and deck (12 meters), 5 meters apart. Are there any tricky building codes or regulations we would have to meet to use this material? Does anyone have any advice or experience building with recycled I beam? I've also been trying to find an average price per lineal meter for salvaged I beam, it seems to vary from about $18 to $45! Thanks in advance! Hi I am wanting some opinions about the build of a steel shed I am going to get one about 4.5 x 2.5 m steel shed and the height will be about 2.3-2.4m high The one I am… 0 10552 Building Standards; Getting It Right!
