Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 26, 2012 4:47 pm In order for us to be able to afford the house that we want, the builder has suggested we delete the ducted aircon from our quote, saving us $13,000 and that way making us much more comfortable in terms of the mortgage repayments. When we first started looking for a house, aircon was one of the musts for me, but I'm starting to think it's something we can add later, especially seeing as we move in mid year (May/June), so we probably won't need it for a while anyway. I didn't actually think you could add ducted aircon in an existing house, but apparently you can in single story houses, so that opens up this option to us. Thoughts? Anyone live without aircon? We do at the moment, and I don't like it, I have to be honest. It is a really old house though, with old French doors all around the one side of the house, so lots of draft in winter and it gets really cold, and it gets super hot in summer. I'm hoping new houses nowadays are built better to keep heat in/out? We won't have roof sarking, but we'll have the normal batting insulation that new houses come with these days. Doesn't bother me so much ( I work at Moomba - 45Deg C + in Summer). My partner isnt so keen but you do what you have to. New houses are a lot better sealed than old houses - not so many draughts. AJ Re: Installing ducted aircon after build 3Sep 26, 2012 8:37 pm Hi there We added ducted refrigerated air con to our old house which was probably about 14 years old at time of doing it. It worked wonderfully well, the installers used the same holes as the ducted heating, however increased the size of the ducts and put in new ducting. We just got a new controller for the aircon side of things as our aircon was a different brand to our ducted heating. It certainly would be cheaper to DIY in my opinion. Good luck! Re: Installing ducted aircon after build 4Sep 26, 2012 9:49 pm Hi, In the first house we built, we were on a really tight budget, we too couldn't afford ducted A/C for the first 2 yrs . Then we added it later. They actually put the ducting in through the roof. They took a few roof tiles out, & put the ducting in. Took about 3 hrs to install. So the answer to your question is yes, you can add the A/C later after you've moved in provided you don't mind living without it for a while .
