Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 31, 2008 2:18 pm Hi all - anyone had any experience with sandstone cladding products?
Our facade is similar to this (but not the colour scheme - haven't decided that yet): Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We'll also have a facade down the side of the house (facing the golf course) where our games room will proejct out from the main part of the house about 50cm and be a parapet roof similar to the garage. To make a nice feature - we were thinking of using sandstone cladding on the games room and then possibly also doing the garage the same way to make it look consistent. I like the look of Unreal Stone - here's an example where it's mixed with brick Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We want nice earthy tones for the house and though a sandstone feature might be nicer than the stackstone pillars & features you see all the time. What do people think? Can you mix old materials like sandstone with new and make it work? After 4 years - we're in! Re: Sandstone cladding 2Mar 31, 2008 2:42 pm I really like the first facade!! Gorgeous!!
As for the sandstone there is a cluster of new townhouses around the corner from me that have sandstone around the portico and the rest of the house in brick with some render - they look reallly nice in my opinion. I think it will look great - especially in the beautiful surrounds of a golf course Re: Sandstone cladding 3Mar 31, 2008 3:13 pm haywgl - any chance you could pretty please snap a pic for me next time you're out? In Sydney so far I've only seen full sandstone houses but no new mixed material houses. After 4 years - we're in! Re: Sandstone cladding 4Mar 31, 2008 3:42 pm I think mixed materials are fine so long as it's real and not just for some temporary aesthetic value. Some people might remember the brief craze for fake bricking cladding maybe 20 (??) years ago. I'm sure the end result was to subtract to the value and most of it has been ripped off again.
Cladding is also particularly bad when used next to the real thing. I recall the aquatic centre and skateboard park built - bizarrely - in front of St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney. It was very close to some of the beautiful sandstone buildings of Macquarie Street, but used sandstone cladding about 10mm thick. Absolutely appalling work and looked cheap and nasty as hell. They used to do liquid limestone paving as well - but not anymore - can't get the raw materials! After 4 years - we're in! Re: Sandstone cladding 9Apr 01, 2008 9:45 am It's used along the street frontage opposite the museum. I haven't been back there for a couple of years so if you don;t see it they may have taken it down. Re: Sandstone cladding 10Apr 05, 2008 7:45 pm We visited the Unreal Stone showroom today - all I can say is WOW! The product looks so realistic - no evidence of mouldwork that I've seen in other products.
It comes as thin pieces for cladding or they can make it with foam on the back that can go straight onto your wooden frame (apparently 2x more thermal benefits than brick) They also make it in bricks. Definitely on our "must have" list. Also looked at the Urban Stone showroom - very impressed with their limestone pavers - nice large format (600x600). About $150m2 laid & sealed. Does any one have this facade and could they take some photos? Michelle, you posted a photo of a stone and tin facade, can you remember where you saw it? I love the look of that stone wall. Love seeing photos. Too hard to imagine what it will look like. Thanks. Re: Sandstone cladding 13Sep 30, 2010 12:54 pm Thanks Kyton, Beautiful pictures in that site. But I think I would like the natural stone look as in Michelle photo earlier. I'm not sure if that is cladding or real stone. Real stone is not in my budget!
