Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Building in Fernvale - HANDOVER 3rd JUNE!! 422May 13, 2013 9:45 pm We went and looked at furniture today, but we couldn't agree on anything! *lol* We're going to look for more stuff online and probably make a decision in the next couple of weeks. I saw some pieces I really liked, but DH doesn't like the colour. Also, we went out to the house to talk to the SS today (no pics because nothing much had been done since last time, except the last bits of painting), and apparently the kitchen splashback, shower screens and mirrors are going in tomorrow, the rest of the electricals later in the week, and the driveway on Friday! I'm REALLY tempted to go out again on Thursday to have a look at the stuff that's been done, but I might not have time. We organised our phone and internet today, we'll likely be without internet for about a week after handover, but that's okay. We've also booked the removalist for 2 days after handover (the 5th June), just because we will still have our rental for a week after the handover date, so we're taking our time with the move. 20 days!!! ETA: Oh, and we asked about the gas certificate, and it turns out that is all done internally between the builders, trades and gas people, which means we don't have to do anything. We only have to worry about it when we need a second bottle installed, for which they will give us the certificate at handover. Very happy with that! We've been going to see the house ever week for the last month or so, and every 2 weeks before that. We remember seeing the aircon ducts go into the ceiling at frame stage before the plastering was done. Now that we're less than 4 weeks from handover, there are no aircon vents or switches anywhere!! It's all been painted, and the aircon hasn't been mentioned at all. We're paying $15,000 for aircon, and I think they've forgot!! ETA: We just heard back from our SS, and it's all good! It will be done in the next couple of weeks! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Any idea how much this amount of landscaping would cost us (excluding the turf)? What we basically need someone to do for us is the pebbles/gravel, the stepping stones/pavers, garden and driveway edging, hedging, and planting of one big tree in the backyard (we can do the small garden beds ourselves). Our turf guy has told us we should get the landscaping done before the turf is laid. Has anyone done it in that order before? You'd save heaps if you (or DH!) just did it yourself. DH and his friends and fam did ours in probably 8 days? Including turf. For the gravel, depending on the colour, ranges from about $75-$150/cubic metre. Pavers say, $6 each? You could also use sand and stuff underneath that to keep the pavers level, and then cement them in. Soil for your gardens, I think maybe between $50-$70/cubic metre. You'll also need to allow for garden edging. Plants will depend on where you get them from and how big. Landcare here (don't know if you have one there) you can get native shrubs for $2 each, but obviously they are tiny. Go to markets and wholesale nurseries, or use online 'for sale' sites to find people selling cheap plants. We did our landscaping first, I think you aren't supposed to walk on the turf much for a few weeks so it catches or whatever, so that's probably why? 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: Building in Fernvale - Garden design 426May 14, 2013 10:08 pm Thanks, stelle! We were thinking of doing our own pavers on the sides of the house, but there is so much equipment you need to hire, plus you need to make sure everything slants the right way for drainage, etc, and it just sounds very complicated. I'm not sure we'll do it right. *lol* PS: Love your new avatar pic! It was great too because I could send the design to the turf guy to give him an idea of how much we'd need done, and I can now do the same with a landscaper (if we chicken out of doing it ourselves). I'm just worried we'll make a mess of it if we do it. *lol* Settlement: 10.02.13 Slab: 06.03.13 Frame: 08.03.13 Lock-up: 05.04.13 Handover: 03.06.13 Build thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59555 Brisbane Photography Re: Building in Fernvale - Garden design 429May 16, 2013 5:03 pm Our beautiful splasback!! When I was there yesterday, I noticed a rather large ugly square of mesh on the ceiling in the corner of the dining room. I figured it was something to do with the aircon, but it's really ugly, and pretty much visible from every angle of the open living space. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We called our SS, and he explained it's the intake vent for the aircon, and that it had to be put there because it's the biggest room in the house. Would have been nice to be consulted (it wasn't on the plans) to see if we could come up with a less ugly option/location, I can think of a few options that would have been better and still positioned in the largest room in the house. *sigh* Anyway, we asked if it's possible to at least have it painted white or have the mesh replaced with a lighter one, and he's looking into it. Big mistake it might have been out of the way but the air struggled to get there and because of that made such a loud tornado like noice our kids were scared of it!! Love your home by the way Re: Building in Fernvale - Ugly aircon vent 438May 17, 2013 7:28 pm Yeah, the mustard thing is the smoke detector, they'll take off the yellow wrapper before handover. Amy; Oh okay, that's interesting. It does make sense for them to put it in a big room, but there are other places in that big spare it would have been more out of the way. Also, from the sounds of it, you get to have some say in where to put it, and we weren't even told there would be a vent like that. Anyway, we're hoping they can make it a lighter colour so it doesn't stick out so badly.
