Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 10, 2012 9:45 am Hey all We're currently in the process of building a house with Fairmont and have our final builders interview in a few weeks. We want to install approx 20 downlights throughout the house and want to know how other people went about doing this to get a cheapest price. Fairmont will charge $155 per downlight which would cost us $3100 in downlights. We really want LED downlights which means we will need to still change them over to LED's afterwards (not sure if it's a simple plug and play). Would we be better off paying Fairmont to install normal lights ($47 each) where we want the downlights and then getting a sparky to install the LED downlights we are after once we have moved in? Cheers Re: Downlights installation (builder or sparky after the bui 3Sep 10, 2012 11:18 pm tengals yes 100% Would it be better to get them to put in provisions, or actual batten light fittings? Also our builder really only offered this option. Re: Downlights installation (builder or sparky after the bui 5Sep 11, 2012 9:09 am We had the electrician put in fan bases (plug) in the roof near where we wanted down lights, the LED lights we want come in hardwire or plugs so all we have to do is cut a hole and plug it in. You could always get the bases put in and half the down lights and put the rest in later. Re: Downlights installation (builder or sparky after the bui 6Sep 11, 2012 1:45 pm Spoke to Fairmont who said we would be best off having them install wiring to the center of the room and an electrician can then run the down-lights off that. I've read that it's hard to cut the holes etc in the ceilings afterwards though? Downlights installation (builder or sparky after the build?) 7Sep 11, 2012 2:07 pm Cutting the holes isn't hard, the only tricky bit is making sure that you avoid trusses etc in the roof. An experienced electrician should be able to handle this with no problems. Re: Downlights installation (builder or sparky after the bui 9Sep 11, 2012 2:16 pm If you are to put the batten in the centre of the room you will probably not want a downlight there? if you were having say 4 in the living room you would have to patch the roof and from past experience you would notice it unless you paint the whole room. We used a laser and marked out locations that worked with battens/trusses, we currently have little drill holes so we know where the centres are. Re: Downlights installation (builder or sparky after the bui 10Sep 11, 2012 3:17 pm We'll probably go with just wiring to the center then. Just need to find an experienced sparky that won't charge an arm and leg to install these once we move in next year. Thanks everyone! Yes, I have. But, I haven't paid yet. They know they did not do proper jobs and I sent the email re: final payment, I cannot pay. They said, we will do 2nd PCI.
