rumour re claiming rainwater tank rebate

Hi all

I was at the Homeshow today (thanks Homeone!

) and got a quote from a rainwater tank company. I was telling my mum that it was a bit expensive but that the $1000 government rebate would help.

She said that someone had told her not to claim the government rebate for the rainwater tanks, as if the water situation gets worse in the future, the govt will use the list of people who have tanks to say, ok, you guys with tanks are not allowed to use mains water anymore. :shock:

What do people think about this rumour???

well technically you're not supposed to drink tank water for health reasons so I can't see how they could possibly cut off your access to mains water just cause you have a tank .... I was going to go with Urban Legend myself but an early April Fools joke would have covered it as well

They'd be OK to drink - like most tanks are.

But with the amount of fallout & crap in the air in Sydney, I certainly wouldn't risk drinking metro area tank water collected from a roof...... although the catchment isn't far off copping it too - but at least the water is treated before it comes out of your tap.

I think it comes out of news article which suggested that there would be a tax on tanks - subsequently confirmed to be incorrect.

I would be interested to know wether you can claim the rebate on a water tank if you had it installed through a builder at the building stage?

I would be interested to know wether you can claim the rebate on a water tank if you had it installed through a builder at the building stage?

My understanding that in NSW it's part of BASIX compliance and one is not eligible for the rebate in new home construction.
