It's almost been 12 months! Can't wait to be in our new home! Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 22Sep 06, 2012 6:47 pm We are renting, whilst we are owner building. Had to sell the house first, move out to the rental so we could clear the funds to use to build the new one. Been there 7 months now...with only a few weeks to go till we leave.....can't wait. The rental is 1/3 the size of what we are used to and are building now. It has front bedrooms that heat up unbelievably, on even a mildly warm day, then it becomes ultra freezing overnight. No shelter outside or storage, so lucky the new place has a shed already. It's currently on the market, so have to put up with house inspections too. Only drawback is the hour-long commute to family / work / preschool etc. When we move in to our new place in two weeks, we will have only been here for 8 months, so not too bad at all. Building at The Ponds (NSW) in 2012! Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 24Sep 12, 2012 11:57 am We are still renting the same unit we've been in since we moved in together. My dad is our landlord so we have it pretty sweet! It's a tiny little place but it is cheap and convenient.. and we've been there nearly three years so the lease is just month-to-month (plus it's not like Dad is going to turf us out on the street). Have made sure we will be able to cover rent + mortgage until the end - which hopefully isn't too far away... 5.5m Terrace House - Lightsview (Northgate SA) Moved in!! - 22 February 2013 /viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53455 Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 25Sep 12, 2012 12:44 pm November last year we needed a bigger house to rent so we took a 12 months lease on this nice new house.. Little did we know that we would be buying let alone building a new house half way through the lease.. So now we are stuck in this house paying high rent until the build is over.... I dont even know how we will be able to afford the rent and mortgage after lock up and fixing.. its scary but i'm sure we will get through it.. Unfortunately they downsized last year (thinking myself and my sister had gone for good) so it's just a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house, 4 adults and my cat! My stuff is in storage too and I definitely agree, I miss my own stuff but we don't pay rent, my mum cooks my dinner, washes my clothes and cleans so I can't complain Stelle 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 27Sep 12, 2012 4:04 pm atom_ute Just thought it would be interesting to see what living arrangements people have in place whilst they build their new home. I've heard of people living in sheds, caravans and granny flats. Then there's renting or even juggling the sale of your old house whilst the new one is built. My wife and I moved back in with her parents in October last year when we sold our old house to finance the new build. Almost coming up to 12 months living in a 4x3 bedroom in a one bathroom house with 2 smelly cattle dog X. 95% of our stuff is in storage and I am starting to miss my own stuff. Hasn't been easy - most of the time it feels like I'm a stranger in the house, but the financial gain by having this opportunity far outweighs having to deal with my mother-in-law on a daily basis. So what's your story? This^^^ - or at least close to it. We moved from Mulgrave to Dromana in early to mid February this year in with the Mother-in-Law, demolishing the old house at Mulgrave mid-March. The Dromana house is an approx 70 year old California Bungalow with 3 small bedrooms, 1 bathroom and 1 toilet. It's just the MIL, us and our dog. Sounds easy right? WRONG!!!!! Well, it hasn't been a complete train wreck, but not having your own space has been tough, and I'm sure the MIL feels the same. Interestingly, the bride bought a couple of those wooden and canvas open fronted transportable "wardrobes" for our gear. They work well. Except she deemed that the room we're in is not big enough for both her and my wardrobe. So mine had to be put in the 3rd bedroom, and that means I have NO clothes in our bedroom. This is an unsatisfactory arrangement. I had to negotiate hard to be allowed 1 drawer of 8 that is in our dresser in order to put socks & undies. There is no TV point in our room. This means TV only in a communal setting. This means viewing tastes and habits must align. That means I spend A LOT of my time on the laptop. One of the biggest PITA has been the travel. 77Kms one way for me, 85Kms for the bride. That equates to anywhere between 1½ hours (at the absolute quickest) and 2½ hours, one-way to and from work each day. I actually took 3½ hours to get home one night. I made a bottle of Coonawarra Cab Sauv my close friend that night. BUT, financially, it has been well worth it, and for that we are lucky. We would have been about $12,000 - $15,000 worse off had we had to pay rent and then if we were able to find a house rental that would allow us to have the dog. Had we needed to do that, there would have been a good number of things in the house we simply would have had to say no to, and that would have almost certainly meant we would have never been able to get those things in the future. It's been a hard slog, but with only 10 more weeks to go, it's been worth it. Our new house is next door (well over the back fence) ........we split this house off of the original land and are building on the 9 acres that are left..... It,s so much better than the last time we built (3 yrs ago).....we went through 2 rentals while waiting for the house to be built Cheers Mel Building on 9 acres Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 29Sep 12, 2012 5:07 pm I've just invited my inlaws to live in our 3x1 with us. It's a rental, and we have two kids. The dining room has become a bedroom. THere is only one toilet. It's no fun. And we aren't even saving any money. The measly amount we save is blown on extra groceries and toilet paper and water. The only thing making me stick to this plan is that when we finally move in to the new house, I don't have to worry about cleaning up the rental so much, or waiting for the lease to end etc. And also having someone to look after our dog if our new house takes ages to get fencing and landscaping. We are renting now and the last time we built we rented as well and as 24 year olds looking back now I don't know how we did it. Living with parents sounds like such an ideal situation but obviously it has some drawbacks. We haven't had to draw down on our loan yet, it's an interest only construction loan so not sure how painful we are going to find it. Hopefully for all of us once we are settled into our new homes the inlaws and the constant rental inspections (pet hate at the moment) will be a distant memory. One thing that I do know now is after owning my own home for the last ten years I hate renting. Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 31Sep 12, 2012 6:03 pm We are fortunate enough to be able to stay in the house we own whilst we build. The original plan was to sell & rent a dump but the thought of two moves etc drove my husband insane. Not financially sensible to have a mortgage still on this house plus the house we are knocking down plus the construction plus pool loan of $550K plus! We are very lucky because it is a beautiful place, a cute little house and the rent is below market. But we still find it very difficult going back to renting and having someone tell us how we should be living our lives. The houses are also very close together so although we have privacy inside the house there is no privacy outdoors. We also expected to be here for 6 months so have not unpacked anything but crap service from builders got in the way of that plan I think we will be here for 1 year 6 months by the time our house eventually gets built! I find it all very frustrating particularly as we are having a baby in December and don't have the room to have our family come to visit in any meaningful way and it will be just the three of us for Christmas as we can't travel with such a fresh one and we don't have room to host everyone here. However, over the next few months we are tossing up what to do in terms of living arrangements. Our rent has just jumped an extra $100 a month and we are conciosus the budget is only going to get tighter! So we have two options at the moment: 1) Stay in our relatively new and decent-sized rental on a month-to-month lease (I don't want to lock in a timeframe becasue I'm not sure how long the build will take). It's only my fiance and I, and we can afford to stay but Option 2 is very tempting if we want to save some $$$. Staying put is also attractive because it means we don't have to move again until the house is built! 2) Move out with my fiance's cousin, his wife and baby into a house with a granny flat so we can halve the rent/bills/etc for six months. This is really tempting but I can see it getting complicated when one party is ready to leave and the other cannot afford to pay the rent on their own. Not sure how I'd go living in a Granny Flat though... Re: What are your living arrangements whilst you build? 34Sep 13, 2012 8:12 pm I'm pretty sure my inlaws have misunderstood our goal, and think we invited them to live with us so <i>they </i> could save money. No money has been offered for rent or groceries or anything and we've had to upgrade internet, pay for their vacate and truck hire etc.. huge jump in water and electricity already... The whole point of this was so I wouldn't get stressed about money but the exact opposite is happening.. We are going to be selling our place soon to build and will have to rent. My IL's would have us stay if it weren't for the fact we have two dogs and a cat. The cat is tiny and an indoor cat so she is well trained and makes no trouble but MIL doesn't like cats. The dogs are understandable as they have two of their own and even though they're all smallish it would be a lot of dogs for my MIL to take care of while FIL and us are at work. It would save us a LOT of money though and the rental market in Perth is so tight I am worried we won't be able to find anywhere. On the bright side a neighbour has expressed interest in buying our place (only wants the land for a business) so there may be hope yet if we can rent the house and a little of the yard space back. Didnt quite work like that: Moved out of old house - renovated old house - old house took nearly 4 years to sell - After waiting 2 years decided to build granny flat first - been living in granny flat for 2 years now - New house just had slab poured. cons: Theres 3 of us (Bride, myself and 11yr old son) in 5x10m, 2 bedroom dwelling. (Very tight for space). A lot of our belongings are in storage in a shipping container, also on our block. Had to put off having more kids due to lack of space. Pros: Invested money into granny flat as opposed to rent. Live at rear of block so can watch the new house being built. We will so appreciate having our large new home. Im sure it will make it all worth waiting for. Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
