The DIY kits are so easy to instal. I haven't heard there to many problems with them, but i guess like any DIY, it ain't going to be like the real thing. The other downfall with DIY light battens, is that the variety is very limited. Nonetheless, i guess the DIY range has a niche market, and is doing ok. As for the safety side of things, while installing them, i'd be switching the main power to the whole house off (just incase you may have a blown bulb), and then carrying out the work.
