Just wondering if people who are living in HIghlands can tell me what internet service you have. We are in stage 106 which is the Mt Ridley road end. We are about to have handover in the next couple of week, so are looking around for internet. DH is an IT person, so not having it would be almost cause for a marriage breakdown I think!!!
DH has called optus, they advised that only telstra are offering services in our section and nbn not as yet available. We are thinking of going naked adsl with voip for phone line.
Any input would be appreciated.

Have a look at http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au/
Enter your address in and it should hopefully be able to provide you with an idea of the connectivity for your area and potential speed.
Unfortunately to save costs, many new estates are connected to the local telephone exchange via fibre optic cable to a RIM. This means that copper cabling does not have to be run directly from the exchange to your house, it only has to be run from the RIM to your house.
This kinda looks like:
Telephone exchange------->Fibre Optic Cable------> RIM-------->Copper line------>Your house
ISP's hardware is usually installed at the telephone exchange, which means if you are connected to the exchange by copper you can usually choose any ISP that has hardware installed at the exchange.
Unfortunately if you are behind a RIM, you are at the mercy of Telstra, as they usually don't let other providers install ADSL2 equipment in the RIM cabinet . This means that your only options are ADSL1 with any provider who has hardware at the exchange (8000k) or ADSL2 (24,000k) either through Telstra or someone who re-sells Telstra - which is usually a lot more expensive.
However one advantage of being behind a RIM is that you can usually achieve much higher speeds on ADSL2 if you are a significant distance from the exchange.

As we spoke earlier in the year and I know roughly where you're located... I'm sorry to report that from what I've heard from others in the area, you got buckleys chance - You're both too far from the exchange, and there's SFA ports available at last I heard. But hopefully I'm wrong.
And only those of us on the West side of Malcolm Creek have NBN from rollout.
The following stages have NBN either already, or it'll be completed 'soon':
89, 127-131, 134, 136, 139-145, 147, 164, 166, 168.

Thanks for your responses guys... seems like a bit of a nightmare. Who would have thought that in 2012 it would be such an issue!. Will see what we can found out in the coming days from the telco's.

We’ve never had anything get wet. And apparently it will fit a case of beer. Have a look on their website - they have a video that shows all the features and pricing etc.
