Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 16, 2012 3:05 pm Hi there My partner and I are building a house at the Ponds, the builder we have chosen has advised they would charge us $5,000 to get NBN installed. We think this is quite expensive and would probably prefer at this time to get ADSL. Does anyone who is living or building in The Ponds have any information regarding this? Advice would be muchly appreciated!!!! Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 2Aug 16, 2012 3:55 pm I think you may be a little confused about what your builder is providing. I am assuming that your estate is NBN ready - therefore the infrastructure has already been rolled out to the estate (e.g fibre is running past your house) Once your house is completed, you contact your preferred ISP to connect to the NBN. Standard installation is free (this involves running fibre to your house FTTH and having the Network Termination Device installed. Below is a really good guide. http://www.internode.on.net/pdf/product ... -fibre.pdf What I believe your builder is going to charge you for is wiring up your house with network cables, which if even every room had a data point $5000 is still very expensive Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 3Aug 16, 2012 7:32 pm Aitch72, I too am building at the ponds with eden brae homes. They charged me $550 to have my house NBN ready, this included conduit from street to my house, and extra data point and phone point upgraded to CAT6. Contact the builder and find out why its 5k and find out what exactly they are charging for, that sounds totally like an overkill. And yes, the ponds is NBN ready Hope that helps _________________ Building with EBH - Saville 30 @ The Ponds Building Blog - http://rabsndee.blogspot.com 22/08 - Slab Done 07/09 - Frames 16/09 - Roof 02/10 - Bricks 26/10 - Lockup 17/01 - Settlement Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 4Aug 17, 2012 10:33 am Thank you both Rabsta and atom_ute for your replies, I will check out the website you mention. My builder states that the cost is for: Provide Telstra Velocity Network basic package, including the following: 1 Hills Home Hub 600 series 1 x 25w 18ac Power module 1 hills splitter 1 x 8 port tele module 1 x 8 port data/patch module The actual price is $4,455. Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 5Aug 17, 2012 10:38 am Please do not pay the $5000. This is extremely high even if the previous poster was correct and the builder is charging you for internal wiring and data points throughout the house. Please note this has nothing to do with the NBN at all, having your house smart wired with network points is a personal choice and is by no means mandatory. If your estate is one of the NBN 'Greenfields' estates then the NBN infrastructure should be 100% free for you. If it is not one of these, then the developer of your estate is responsible for getting the NBN infrastructural in place, and it is their prerogative whether this cost is passed onto you. Here is some more documentation for you to read: http://www.nbnco.com.au/assets/document ... he-nbn.pdf Of particular note: page 5 'how much will the installation cost' http://www.dbcde.gov.au/__data/assets/p ... e_2011.pdf Of particular note: page 3 'From 1 January 2011, in all types of new developments, developers will ensure that pit and pipe—including trenching and ducting, design and third-party certification for development approval purposes—are installed and are fibre-ready.' Also, if you're unsure just give the NBN Co a call directly, they are very helpful. They will be able to give you an account of what is included as 'free'. 1800 881 816 The other thing is, NBN is not mandatory! If you want to stick with ADSL, decline the NBN installation and go with that! You're completely entitled to do that. Includes Powerpoint and condute from side of house to unit) Additional Data Runs $80 I could have not had that inlcuded and run my own calbing after the build. Hi there, sorry just read this bit now. So what he is trying to charge you for is a structured cable/smart home installation. THIS IS nothing to do with the NBN and is completely optional. You do NOT have to have it. Your builder should have explained this and is not being honest with you. Have a read on the Hills Hub website and see if this is something you really want/need: http://www.hillshomesolutions.com.au/arbitrage/pages/38 I would say personally that whilst I would get my home pre-wired/cabled so as you make full use of the NBN transfer speeds within the home (if you use wireless, you will not be able to achieve the speeds that NBN is capable of - but you might not want/need to) - I would not use a HHH because it is outdated and limited technology. In saying this, his quote seems extremely high. I got a quote for the HHH and 12 data points throughout the house and the cost came to $3800. This was before I researched HHH and realised it was not capable of things I want to do like transmit HD video around the house. In the future velocity may become NBN standard, but for now, telstra have that area stitched up http://www.telstra.com.au/smart-communi ... /index.htm you don't get to take advantage of the free NBN rollout unfortunately, which accounts for the high install charge, and you get locked into telstra as a provider. But it is close to NBN standards aside from that. Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 10Aug 19, 2012 9:36 am Thank you for your feedback. I was just wondering for those who have NBN installed, where was the main network termination device installed within the home? And also, where did the fibre optic go inside the home? And one more, was the NBN installed during the home build or after you moved in? thank you! Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 11Aug 19, 2012 10:21 am My to be soon neighbour has nbn and paid $0.00 to have itsetup and installed. Telstra came out and set everything up and he isnow on a 24month plan. I agreee too with the previous post, smart wiring is not manditory for NBN readiness _________________ Building with EBH - Saville 30 @ The Ponds Building Blog - http://rabsndee.blogspot.com 22/08 - Slab Done 07/09 - Frames 16/09 - Roof 02/10 - Bricks 26/10 - Lockup 17/01 - Settlement Re: NBN at The Ponds, help please 12Aug 19, 2012 10:25 am Hi Aitch72. We just received our final tender variations based upon the private certifier's certificate, so we are about to sign the contract. There has been $1700 added to our tender for 'provide Optic Fibre home wiring including 2 x data points, 2 x telephone points and 1 tv point". My understanding from comments above was that we can run everything through a wireless router once the NBN provider comes out to set us up (which should cost nothing). Is this correct? Is the wiring a council requirement?? Any feedback would be very much appreciated! There is a requirement that you have a phone line, but probably only for the occupancy certificate. The NBN is the 'mandatory phone line' replacement, as there is no copper in your area I don't believe. Given you will be using VoIP with the NBN, the normal phone points are probably totally useless, and you should make them data points instead. Yes you can use wifi, and wait for NBN co to roll around and install it. Plenty of info on the NBN site btw, and its pretty clear. You need to request more detail from the builder first though, to understand exactly what equipment they mean. Thankyou so much 😀 I've decided on White on white for doors and trims, White on white 50% on ceiling and Mt buller for walls. Fingers crossed it will look OK 😀 2 7143 i had the my concreters concrete right up to the fence. I have pits all along my path, so the water tends to drain away from the house and into the pits.
