Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 25, 2008 6:28 am Hi Homeone members
I'm back with another question. When building a new house, how does one avoid squeaky (loud squeaky) upper storey floors. Or is this unavoidable with nailed down chipboard floors ? Has anyone overcome this with their project home builder ? Radds Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 2Mar 25, 2008 4:22 pm They actually glue the boards down and the nails are just to keep the board down until the glue dries.
Saying that I went around on a saturday arvo during construction armed with 2 battery drills and 200 x 50mm screws and went nuts. I've been thru that many homes that have squeaky top floors I wanted to make doubly sure that they would never squeak. Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 5Mar 25, 2008 4:46 pm NOTE:
If having carpets installed over MDF floor, make sure they install the smoothedge VERY securely. Its normal for them to simply nail it down, but nails don't hold well in MDF. The smoothedge should be screwed down, at least in areas of greater tension. Ash. Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 7Mar 25, 2008 7:40 pm Or you could plan on building a nightingale floor.
My neice told me about this when she visited it. http://www.yamasa.org/japan/english/destinations/kyoto/nijo.html Steve Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 9Mar 25, 2008 10:22 pm Sneak in before they lay the carpet. Builders generally don't work on Sunday
Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 10Mar 26, 2008 11:29 am radds My concern is that we are not permitted on site without the site supervisor. I'm sure he'll notice the screws won't he ? Then .....trouble. We were told the same thing But I couldnt tell you how many times we went on site, At least once a weeks if not more as we lived 1 km away. At one stage I asked the foreman if I was able to run my own speaker wire and network cable thru the house. His response was If your asking me then my answer is no, but if your not asking me then ...make sure you you put you wire at least 300mm away from the electricity wires and wait until the electrician has been thru. Not only did we go on our building site but as our builder was building about 50 million other homes in our area we went and had a look thru those ones as well, all at varying stages of completion. Will he notice the screws? I doubt it very much. These guys go on site to co-ordinate trades and to fix problems. They're not on site to look for things to do. they have better things to do then look for screws in the floor. Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 11Mar 26, 2008 11:38 am Thankyou Shady .......you've been a big help
Now I won't feel intimidated about going on site - will definitely be there on a regular basis, especially fixing in those darned screws & anything else that needs fixing. Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 12Mar 27, 2008 9:35 am The biggest problem you have is getting into the place after lockup.
I wouldn't be worried about being there - after all, it's your place, and you will have paid out quite a lot until that stage. Like the idea of screwing down the floors. I'll take that one on myself just before we move in. Cheers Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 13Mar 27, 2008 8:28 pm Cookiemonster radds Mark, this one's for you : How can I get these sheets SCREWED DOWN if the buiding company is supplying the carpet. I don't think they'll let us do that - no way! Sneak in before they lay the carpet. Builders generally don't work on Sunday. And after 3:30pm weekdays, Saturday..... Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 14Mar 27, 2008 8:39 pm We have the same problem as well, but it's because our builder didn't put on the roof tiles until all the brick walls finished ==> which took 6 weeks. And our 1st floor floor board was soaked in water during the heavy rain, the join area "lipped" qite badly after that.
The floor sanding guy has to come back twice to sand it to an acceptable level. Problem is, during the sanding, he has to cut out so much that in a few rooms, the nail head were damaged/removed during the process, thus caused some squeaking floors. Our supervisor then have to do the floor nailing again in some areas to fix the noise. After the hand over, we will do the same thing as cookie suggested, get some screws and do these extra work ourselves. Just a suggestion, you might want to bring a power drill and drill a smaller hole before you start to save some effort, otherwise you might hurt yourself and need to take a whole week sick leave after all these.... Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 15Mar 28, 2008 4:52 am Gosh, you guys are great ! Thankyou , thankyou for all your suggestions.
Homeone is a godsend, particularly for us novices. We need all the help we can get, to deal with the ******* buiding game. The building trade should realy be ashamed of itself. They have absolutely no concept of customer service and not a clue as to a decent work ethic. In any other business sphere, these building companies would have gone under long ago. I've just let a friend know about this forum because he will be doing a major extension on his house shortly - he will need all the help he can get. Re: SQUEAKY UPPER STOREY FLOORS 16Mar 31, 2008 8:47 am Just did 695 screws for "securing" our whole first floor flooring board (5 bedrooms + upper living) during the weekend, although I got a power tool from friend, still got sore arms & shoulders after the exercise...
