Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 11, 2012 9:37 pm Hi We have 8'6" ceilings. We chose at our builders selection centre 55mm cove cornice. Went on site this week to discover 75mm cornice had been installed throughout the house. Our builder has now informed us that "apparently when the Ceilings are Higher they are having trouble covering the rebate in the Plaster with the Smaller Cornice. They have had a couple of Issues with the Cornice in Garages not covering the rebates on the plaster Sheets" So basically you can only have 55mm with 8' ceilings. I think this sounds like a load of ..... Going by this theory you wouldnt be able to have square set cornice in heigher ceilings. Are there any plasterers out there with more knowledge than my builder. Is it really true or are they trying to get out replacing or compensating us. Re: Cove cornice- ceiling height?? 2Aug 11, 2012 9:58 pm Depending on what height the top plate is, it is conceivable 55mm cornice won't fully cover the rebate in the sheet and this has to be filled. Leaves the potential of a line just below your cornice. As for square set cornice the sheets come together in the corner so it doesn't matter. Re: Cove cornice- ceiling height?? 3Aug 11, 2012 10:05 pm Basically the standard sizes of Plasterboard is 2400 x1200 so 2400 won't make the gap between top of skirting board and bottom or cornice. It is possible to get 3000 x 1200 board but there will be extra labour cutting the board, and a fair bit of wastage so it costs the builder more. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Cove cornice- ceiling height?? 5Aug 11, 2012 10:47 pm Thanks for your answers. Just annoyed I pick one and they use another. Still don't get it though, if they can make the corners meet with square set, use the same principles and put the 55mm cove cornice over it??? Think they just ordered wrong one with plasterer and are back peddling. Like I would make them remove it. Re: Cove cornice- ceiling height?? 7Aug 13, 2012 9:28 am Mitch the reason it works for square set is you pay a poop load more to make it work. Personally I think the wider cornice looks better anyway. 55mm is good inside robes and linens where it's relative to the size of the area. The photo is not really clear but to me it looks like twist in the cornice.
