The only downfall is that you need to lift the blind when you want to fully open or close the door because they get bumped or the handle catches in the cord. If you are going to hang them from the ceiling that is not an issue because you can allow for that. Roman blinds for sliding door may not be a good idea as you have experienced. I would suggest Roller (or Holland Blinds) if you prefer the clear line but you'd better split them into two (again depends on how many panel your sliding door has), which means you only need to put one roller up to the TOP when you need to open or close the door. And you can choose light filtering fabric to allow some lights coming in or even screen fabric if privacy is not a concern. The chain control with roller is lot more easier to manage compare to cords with Romans.
