Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 30, 2012 8:01 pm Has anyone else out there used PGH oyster bricks for there house? We are looking at this brick but we are having a bit of trouble trying to find colors that compliment it. We are having a brick frontage with a rendered portico. Any colour suggestions for the render/roof/roller door would be much appreciated. If you have used oyster bricks we would love to see pics - we need some serious inspiration!!! They have a few photos and suggestions for colours that compliment this brick. Here is a link to the brick page. http://www.pghclay.com.au/Bricks/Show_152.aspx Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 5Jul 30, 2012 9:05 pm It is an extremely difficult and time consuming process. We have chosen PGH Smoke and have decided to go Monument for the roof and gutters, Paperbark for the fascia, windows and garage doors. It all depends on your colour preferences. Do you want to go with a dark or light coloured roof? Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 6Jul 30, 2012 9:11 pm I totally agree kimmid - Its a really massive decision and each decision you make effects the following decisions. Our trouble at the moment is that I prefer darker colors and my partner prefers light, but we are trying unsuccessfully to find something in the middle (and a bit of a compromise from both of us). The colors you have picked look great - its a nice balance! Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 7Aug 01, 2012 6:30 pm I went with PGH Mild Steel - it might be an inbetween colour to consider. It is a brown but its not too dark - its quite nice and I matched it with the Monier MochaChoc rooftile, jasper gutters and facia, dune garage door and surf mist windows. Dearheart Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 8Aug 01, 2012 9:02 pm Dearheart - how much did you pay to upgrade to the Mild Steel bricks. I actually don't mind them. I think there is a display home at Kellyville using the Mild Steel and they are quite similar to Smoke, only not smooth. I was just trying to convince my husband to consider the Mild Steel bricks, but I am not having much success. Monaco Build - I started out like you. I liked the darker bricks and my husband liked the lighter bricks. But we had our heart set on the Monument Colorbond roofing so that helped me to decide on a lighter brick and then it was just a matter of finding the right "light" colour. I didn't want anything too light, like the Vanilla. We spent hours going to the brick selection centres (Boral, PGH and Austral) and then driving around the new estates to see what houses looked like in a particular colour. I think that is the best way to make a decision. Go the brick centres, get the addresses of the coloured bricks you like and see what they look like in a whole house. Its only then that you can truly make a decision. Seeing an entire house out of one brick is different to seeing a small wall. Good luck with your selection! I was just trying to convince my husband to consider the Mild Steel bricks, but I am not having much success. I was charged just under 3000 for the bricks and 320 for the off-white mortar but someone else on this site was charged a little over half of what I was for the same brick and the same house - so who know whats up with that. Its a little more than I wanted to pay but I really wanted the brick - so what are you going to do?? I knew that I would really regret it if I went with anything else to save a little money - it was a cost that I just had to wear. I also considered 'smoke' but in the end I prefered the mild steel - I saw a number of display homes in it (with different roofs and windows) and was able to work out exactly what I liked. Take your husband to go and see the bricks in a home - they look completely different than the website. Tjere had been other bricks that I thought looked great on the website but didn't look anywhere near as good in real life. And others that I thought looked good in the small display in the brickyeard but didn't look good for a whole house. You MUST go see them in real life in a house. The PGH website has a list of display homes with different bricks and the brickyard should be able to give you some houses to look at. I know that it is more driving around but it's really worth it. Dearheart Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 10Aug 02, 2012 7:37 am Thanks Dearheart. Which display houses are done in Mild Steel. I do need to have a look at a real house in the MS. I have seen the Smoke and like it a lot. I am prepared to pay for the bricks I want but within reason. Considering Somke is up there in the upgrades I could only imagine the additional costs. It might be way out of our price range. Have you started building? Where abouts are you building? Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 11Aug 03, 2012 10:16 pm The display houses that I looked at are in Newcastle/Maitland suburbs - where are you? I am building in Fletcher and should be starting towrds the end of the month - it has been a long process but were getting close to the final stage now: The Building. Dearheart Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 12Aug 03, 2012 10:55 pm We are building in Sydney. We had our tender presentation today and received some bad news though. The presentation went well and met our expectations. However, we are purchasing a house and land package through EBH and were notified today that the registration date for the land has been set back 4 months. So we are now looking at an extra 6 months wait to get under way. We were very disappointed. We went from an excited, happy outlook to one of frustration and skepticism. Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 13Aug 04, 2012 6:27 am We started out looking at Smoke brick as well but then we noticed all the new schools and electrical sub- stations were being built with that brick so that turned us off it. We went to Driftwood Mottle which is in same range of Smoke but more grey/brown than brown. We moved away from Driftwood Mottle because the colour changed dramatically and went to Mild Steel. We loved Mild Steel. The wire cut finish gives it character rather than the super smooth smoke brick. We ended up with Megalong Valley grey. It's a dry pressed solid brick. Beautiful brick but painful and expensive to lay and difficult to clean because it is such a sensitive brick. Given all of that and with no regrets with the bricks we ended up with, if I was building with project builder I would've absolutely picked Mild Steel. There is an exterior pic of my place on my thread. The thread has 'Vess' in the title. I can't do links on my phone. Re: PGH 'oyster' bricks 14Aug 04, 2012 3:31 pm I seem to have thought the exact same thoughts we it comes to bricks. Your choices were the same as mine. I will see if I an find your thread. 0 1755 DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall.
