Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 26, 2012 11:53 pm It is so confusing. Some tile shops saying that their tiles are factory sealed and they don't need sealing. When I asked them if it is written on invoice or on the box of tile that they are sealed, they said no. Some tile shops (specifically magic tiles) say that all polished porcelain tiles need to be sealed after laying. They said even that even if polished porcelain tiles are factory sealed, they still need to be sealed regularly. Also they said that after laying tiles, wax need to be removed and then seal the tile. Any one who used polished porcelain tile, did you seal the tile or removed wax etc? Re: do polished porcelain tiles need sealing? 3Aug 01, 2012 5:58 pm easy way to check is grab a texta and mark a small bit in the corner of the tile, if it wipes off easy and basically leaves no stain, then the tile is sealed, if not, then you will need to seal it. Re: do polished porcelain tiles need sealing? 4Aug 01, 2012 9:27 pm tengals easy way to check is grab a texta and mark a small bit in the corner of the tile, if it wipes off easy and basically leaves no stain, then the tile is sealed, if not, then you will need to seal it. that is exactly what i plan to do now. But most of the tiles have wax on them. So i have to remove the wax first. Re: do polished porcelain tiles need sealing? 5Aug 01, 2012 9:46 pm I don't know if this helps??! http://www.australiantilecouncil.com.au ... elain-tile Other sites say that you don't need to seal glazed tiles (which polished tiles fall under that category) but also says to check with the supplier. It sounds to me like there is no one clear answer...it depends on the particular tile that you buy! I always found tile boutique really helpful with any question i had (and I didn't buy through them so not trying to sell you what i got!!!) Re: do polished porcelain tiles need sealing? 6Aug 01, 2012 9:54 pm as far as I know, porcelain tiles are already sealed but my uncle who used to do the plotting always advice that it would always be better to use spacers for better look. Re: do polished porcelain tiles need sealing? 7Aug 01, 2012 11:00 pm My understanding from talking to people at a few different tile shops is that good quality polished porcelain doesn't need sealing and don't have a thick wax coat that needs removing. Great tip with the texta though! I agree tile boutique was very helpful to us too... but I think we are getting tiles from them Re: do polished porcelain tiles need sealing? 8Aug 01, 2012 11:57 pm after a lot of research and talking to few tiling shops, the conclusion is : polished porcelain - when it is glazed, it is not porous and do not need sealing. polished porcelain - when it is polished, pores get open so it become porous and requires sealing. some companies seal it and some don't. Even if the company seal it once, sealing durability depends on customer's use and might need to seal it again after some time - of course depending on how well it is sealed it factory and how it is used at home.
