Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 921Nov 01, 2015 6:52 am If there will be an expansion joint in the brickwork on a whole wall (from eaves to slab - often on the side of the garage); organise for it to be hidden at the plan draw stage by hiding it behind a down pipe. This is especially important to remember if you are picking lighter coloured bricks as a dark grey/black foam expansion joint will be very obvious. Another thing that I'm sure has been said already is to replace a few ground level kitchen cupboards with rows of pot draws. So much easier to store items in a draw a cupboard. Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 922Nov 09, 2015 8:12 pm I am yet to build, but want to make sure I get a separate CHRSTMAS LIGHT CIRCUIT with a TIMER on it. After renovating and getting lots of power points in the eaves, and external waterproof power points, I was annoyed that I then had to get individual timers for each power point - and they never stayed in sync. Next time I will get a TIMER on the circuit so all my lights can come on at once. Has anyone used http://www.tim-and-tina.com/ for soft closing door damners? Are they legit/good? Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 925Dec 16, 2015 1:29 pm antaliya13 hi we just finished our house and what i found really good was this site http://tradiesquotes.com.au/articles/showpage/31 let me know if you need more help also i had lots of problems with painting but found octopus painting and decorating very good i would use them again What problems with painting? Getting someone in or painting diy?? Im planning to diy it, first timer... Worried but determined to see if it is as hyped up as some make.it sound to be difficulty wise. Probably me underestimating the finish/techniques to painting haha, but jf anyone had a really good, detailed guide with pictures and video accompanying I'd appreciate it. Did anyone go down the handyman path and DIY installation of their window treatments? I got a two piece makita hammer and impact drill set for my birthday on monday. First time with tools but heard venetians and even curtain rods or window vertical blinds tracks are meant to be relatively easy for even a first timer? Particularly if i go down the cheap diy products as it'll eventually be a rental and not my dream home just yet. Think getting a blinds company to install would add in a fair amount of $$? Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 926Dec 17, 2015 5:57 pm Brahma Bull Binny2509 - Maybe get a pull-out bin/double bin - expensive but very handy. This! Bins are ugly and they take up space. Have your builder put one under your sink - And make sure it's a decent size. If a bigger one doesn't fit, get 2 x 15lt ones - Either way make it work. ...... Just joined after reading this entire thread, Phew! Lot of good stuff here. We are planning to build soon once the engineering is sorted. Bins there are slide outs or the old fashioned one which is attached to the door and the lid opens when you open the door. We have had the latter for 10 years and it is much easier to use than other peeps sliding ones. Open door drop rubbish, close door. Other type open door, reach down, slide out bin, drop rubbish, slide bin in, close door, need two hands. Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 928Jan 11, 2016 10:50 pm If you are having a door near (within 1200 mm) the outside of a pool fence make sure the handle is at least 1200 mm from the floor level, else the door handle location will need modifying or the pool fence raising to meet regulations Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 929Jan 24, 2016 9:29 am Just wanted to say thanks for this post and contributors, I have an appointment today with Coral to go over a quote, and had not considered details like exhaust venting, manhole location, lockable internal garage door and garage light switch for hallway, plus many others. Thanks! Coral Homes Avoca 20, Providence, Ripley QLD Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 930Jan 24, 2016 10:29 am Hi One thing we have just now realised is that if you are using slurry faced bricks (and not rendering) you need to get header rows above all your openings (Windows and doors) or at least above your external doors. Unfortunately we didn't realise this early enough and have a normal row of bricks above our doors. The problem of this is that you can see the normal colour of the bricks (orangey/brown) quite prominately! Had they put a header row it would have been the consistent colour of the slurry faced brick. It's not a big thing but does detract from the overall appearance of the house especially when standing on the alfresco looking back at the house Building a modified Madison 39 with Clarendon Homes in Tennyson homeone link: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=79106 Blog Link: https://minandb.wordpress.com/ Re: Things you forget - summary page 32 931Feb 02, 2016 9:50 am Quote: Just joined after reading this entire thread, Phew! So basically pull the handle and it slides out with 2 large bins - one for general one for recycling. no lids to worry about and its enclosed in its own drawer cupboard so keeps smells in. Means I could have bought a trailer load of soil\stones\green waste through the garage instead of trying to cart it down a 1.5m path. Those with a large yard should really investigate the option.
