Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 501Sep 04, 2012 10:53 am The thing I wish we'd upgraded was the light fittings. The builders standard ones are hideous! Things you forget - summary page 20 502Sep 04, 2012 12:59 pm Yup another here to say check the size of your windows on the plan. Luckily I saw before it was too late that the window included in the plan of our house was a quarter of the size of the one in the display home rumpus room. Don't assume the display home has standard anything!!! Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 503Sep 06, 2012 11:00 am When thinking about the location of any indoor gas outlets, e.g. in living areas, put them on external walls if possible so that any future heater/fireplace etc can be externally flued. Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 504Sep 06, 2012 11:59 am kiwi prompted me to write this: turn on ALL the hot water taps at hand-over. As researched and prepared as I thought I was, hand-over day was so busy and exciting last Friday that we forgot to do this. 5 days later we finally had hot water connected, but boy I wished I had remembered to check properly on the first day!!! We have a 680mm almost new fridge as that was all that could fit into the space in the current home and we did not want to buy a new fridge at this stage for our new house. We also did not like the idea of our fridge just sitting in this huge space for a number of years making our new kitchen look unfinished. The builder came up with the idea to put in the extra broom cupboard so we have the flexibility to upgrade in the future. Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 506Oct 04, 2012 9:53 am Great thread. My list of things to check is now huge! Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 508Oct 12, 2012 9:34 pm If you have a large foyer/entrance, consider asking for an extra linen cupboard/storage cupboard designed in. You can still leave enough room for a pretty table and mirror but have enough cupboard space to store things away and keep your new house looking tidy. Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 509Oct 12, 2012 9:42 pm kiwi Woodyren, good idea. Not my idea. We are buying an almost completed home that a builder (not full time) is owner building two new houses side by side for an investment. The space was 1mt and when we told him the size of the fridge he just said "no problem I'll build you a broom cupboard that you can take out later. Great guy and has gone out of his way to do the little extras for us. We are very lucky. Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 510Oct 12, 2012 10:37 pm well, tell him, good idea i hadnt heard of that. much better than a massive gap Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 511Oct 13, 2012 5:52 am woodyren kiwi Woodyren, good idea. Great guy and has gone out of his way to do the little extras for us. We are very lucky. I like that idea as well, very clever! I also will have space/gap left like 26cm. 3yrs ago we requested a 1.2m fridge width because we didn't know which french door fridge to buy. And after I did research now, most of them are only between 89cm - 91cm wide. We only need to provide 5cm space/gap on the right, left & upper side of the fridge so it won't void the fridge warranty. That's left us with 26cm gap if we buy the new LG french door 907lt..... What should I build for 26cm?? Vertical Wine rack?? Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 512Oct 13, 2012 7:59 am just centre it and have the kitchen people build you 2 sticks 13 cms each (for want of a better word) to place each side of the fridge. That is what we have. They are secured to the formica fridge unit at the sides my 'sticks' wont be coming out, hence drilling them in. The kitchen people do it in the same colour as your fridge unit. Hope you can undertsand. Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 513Nov 02, 2012 7:05 pm Telephone line location - most builders will end the conduit with pull wire on the side of the house. My builder decided to do it on the front of the house. I'm now requesting that it gets moved to the side of the house like just about every other house I've seen. Even the telstra technician said a telephone box on the front of a house would look ugly. This was not specified in the contract Unfortunately there may be a cost involved so keep this in mind in your contract... Thanks Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 515Nov 04, 2012 6:06 am It's not a good photo but on the left, the stick hasn't been put in and on the right it has If you are on an iPad, enlarge the picture. But you can see it is just a thin laminated piece of wood that they use to fill in the gap Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I am not sure re display homes, as where I live there is one, and I haven't been in it for Awhile, but it's probably the same idea. The broom cupboard is a good idea ( see the post above) if the space is quite wide, rather than sticks. Re: Things you forget - summary page 20 517Nov 04, 2012 4:57 pm Thanks, kiwi! Yes, I can see it. I'm sure almost all display home here used it. I'll ask how much it is. Kelbelle, Great idea! Thanks for that. Thanks Matt Depends what you're current inclusions are, but we're not including wardrobes and will just use second hand ones until we can save later on to get them built.
