Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 41Jul 24, 2012 11:34 pm delatite, I agree. But my sales rep said "We cannot leave bricks out" So I think it's more they just don't want to have any section of the house like that. I really wish I'd demanded it before I signed the contracts. I'm clearly going to have a really hard time getting it. It was exactly as tinkster said, a skin of extra bricks inside the shower. I offset the shrinkage of the shower by extending it further out. Unfortanetly left no room for a towel rail so had to have two towel rings instead, which I don't mind really. I did NOT want to risk a too small shower that my husband would complain about for the rest of our lives. Re: Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 45Jul 26, 2012 4:36 pm xxkatxx did you get towel rings at least? We have it hard here in WA with these niches Just for anyone curious, my niche cost $200, and $350 in my ensuite because I extended the shower, therefore more tiles and bricks for the hob etc. I think I didn't need to extend the shower at all, I reckon the prestart woman just told me it would make the shower too small to try to dissuade me. Because really, if you didn't have a niche, you'd have a shelf and that protrudes, so you'd still have as little room to move. That woman had a real attitude about everything. Maybe I'm just sensitive, but she was so patronising and negative. I currently use an 3 rack over the door towel rail that i was looking forward to getting rid of but it might come in handy! Glad you got your niches! Good price too Re: Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 47Jul 26, 2012 5:32 pm xkatx Can you just put a towel rail higher on the wall? You could go for a hobless shower, Japanese style. I'm kind of wishing I'd done that. I want a shelf in mine so I can have two levels.. the builder didn't know what I meant, so I've currently got it big enough for two shelves, but have no idea how they do it? Do they literally just make a niche in the wall, or do they put a template thing in it made of plastic inside the niche? (My tiles are 200mm x 400mm) We found them at Crosby Tiles while doing our tile selection - but I will also be asking for a shower Niche. With 3 women in the home, there is never enough space for all the crap we accumulate Re: Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 54Aug 26, 2012 8:12 pm Do you know Donna i just thought "OMG the kiddies dont have a soap dish" after your comment, found some nice ones at Masters hardware, love that shop. Have a feeling I'll get shafted if I put it in the contract. It's just one tile going across, creating a shelf, to divide the niche into two sections. Also it appears to be actually built into the niche, not just grouted in. So it might be something you need to include in your tender as there could possible be a bit more work than just the tiler grouting in an extra tile. I'm no expert but they'd probably want to charge you for the extra work too. Edit: I'm seeing a different photo now, but understand what you mean. It's a good idea if you don't have room for a wide niche.
