Or what are they constructed of? If brick, still not a problem, since they haven't been constructed yet. Just need a small lintel above the cavity (engineered of course) It's then simply lined with cement sheet or similar, then waterproofed same as normal stud frame niches. Hmm, ok so at prestart I will demand the shower niche! This is a relief, I will update with the result after prestart next wed! The brickie can simply install the supplied lintel (by your builder), and brick the opening accordingly, just the same as they would in any other doorway, window or other opening in the bricks. Then your plasterers will simply line the cavity....insist on cement sheet/villaboard or similar as it is thinner and more waterproof than WR (water resistant) plaster. The builder will probably whinge a bit because of the change, just remember, they shouldn't charge you the earth for it, it's a really easy simple change for them. Not being from WA im not sure if the walls are common brick or blocks, either way there is plenty of depth for the shelf, and the width and height can be anything. It doesn't matter what they line it with so dont get caught up with that. Cost wise you will pay what you pay, there is extra work in it for the brickie, plasterer, waterproofer and tiler. If your builder is someone who doesn't like putting them in for what ever reason, then you will pay the "if they want it they can PAY for it price" I guess the main thing for you is, yes it can be done. Cheers mgilla Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 26Jul 22, 2012 5:17 pm They can be done in wa, I've got 2. For both we had an extra cost to build a double brick wall on what would normally be a single internal wall. Even where the shower was on an external wall, they still added an extra layer of bricks to accommodate the niche. I don't k ow how much it cost off the top of my head but it wasn't too much and I LOVE my niches. my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 27Jul 22, 2012 8:31 pm Hmm so are we looking at structural change then? :/ GOODLIFE - Bravo - BUTLER http://getmistyfied.blogspot.com.au Display 20/02/2012 PPA 01/04/12 Prestart: 25/07/12 Settlement: 31/07/2012 Contracts:August Slab 19/11/12 BRICKS 10/11/12 Roof 16/01/13 Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 29Jul 22, 2012 9:54 pm Dave in the Hills, beechwood only charged us $300ish for the shower niche. Maybe they are concerned about water leaking through the waterproof membrane/gyprock into the next room? I think that is for 45cmx45cm. Good to know. Perhaps I got my numbers wrong. Beechwood have been very reasonable about everything else. EDIT: - wait is that for 1 or 2? I think my $600ish figure was for both the bathroom and ensuite. Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 34Jul 24, 2012 12:54 pm People, it's a whole different kettle of fish here in wa. Brick walls, no gyprock, no frame. In a single brick wall (which is what most internal walls are) there is just no way to have a niche. Gotta be double brick, but it only changes the room slightly, see if you can get them Both on the same wall so you only Have one extra thick wall. Yeah it was a structural change but so worth it! my new build thread- Ben Trager https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=89826 my switch build thread (2011) https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=36569 Re: Shower Niche help- single brick; can it be done? 35Jul 24, 2012 2:23 pm tinkster noooooo you have confirmed my fears. I wish I'd demanded the shower niche's before. It'll be at least $350 for the structural change, plus more bricks, and I want two niches.. You definitely think well worth it? :/ I really love them but i have SO many upgrades.. Re just adding the extra bricks in the shower, yep thats what i was saying, ask them. I am going to have to think back on if it was after contract but i dont think it was The thing with our house is that Ventura has not built these sortta homes before & i'm glad they changed their minds. Going to have to see if i have a photo,i'm sure i have, will take acouple of days as i have to swap from lappy to putta & all my kiddies are home now,no quiet thinking time,if i cant find one i am due for a visit out there soon & with take one then & you can see how they did it. I would assume that this is not the case, and whether it be solid plaster, or gyprock sheeting I fail to see how a niche cannot be installed in a single brick wall. Seriously it really is not rocket science. Given that a standard brick is approx 110mm wide plus some type of plaster, unless and exposed brick wall, this will equate to about 120mm without the shower side. I fail to see how a lining cannot be placed inside the niche and waterproofed to make it sound enough to lay a tile on.
