Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 15, 2012 4:42 pm Just wondering what people have paid to upgrade their bricks (builder, cost, and cat please)? M want to charge us: $7,700 for a Sellirk cat 5 $13,320 for a Boral cat 6c ~$21,000 for Austral cat 9 (not certain of this last one, but the price is right for Elements range). Cost to upgrade bricks 2Jul 15, 2012 6:17 pm We are building with W'dom, building a 40sq two storey home, full brick - we upgraded to Austral Symmetry Asphalt, exposure grade bricks (not sure what category they are) cost $6k. Yep, upgrade anything and you see extra $$$$$$ We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! Our blog - http://ourwisdommajestic40.blogspot.com.au/ Our H1 thread - viewtopic.php?t=54156 Re: Cost to upgrade bricks 3Jul 16, 2012 8:07 am BORAL NOVO DOMINO AND MIST CAT 6 $2200. only 25sq home tho. building with burbank. Re: Cost to upgrade bricks 6Jul 16, 2012 9:44 am $1,927 to upgrade from category 1 to category 4 (Boral Mocha) with Porter Davis. 30sq, single storey. Re: Cost to upgrade bricks 8Jul 16, 2012 10:54 am Sorry to go slightly off topic here - but I've been looking at a new build and always assumed that I would stick with the standard range and save my budget for upgrades elsewhere. From reading the cat numbers though and terms like "exposure grade bricks" I'm starting to think that there is more to this decision than just aesthetics - is anyone able to fill me in? http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Cost to upgrade bricks 9Jul 16, 2012 11:24 am We've been collecting sample bricks in preparation for our colour selections. Our builder uses Austral, Boral and Selkirk bricks.... we have brick samples from all 3. I definitely say, some bricks definitely chip more easily than others and a higher CAT brick doesn't neccesarily mean it is less prone to chip or is better quality. In fact, I have CAT 1 bricks that look and feel more solid than some of the higher CAT bricks. Our council imposed a clause in our approved DA that our soil may have high salinity levels, so we could either get a GeoTech survey done first to see if this is the case ($2K) or we could cut our losses and just upgrade our slab ($3K) and change our bricks to "exposure grade". We had already decided to upgrade our bicks before hand ($6K) so thankful they were already exposure grade. We were not aware of the salinity issue before we submitted our DA to council. Maybe worthwhile to check with your council if your land is subject to salinity issues, so you know before hand if you need exposure grade bricks. Not sure if exposure grade bricks could also be required for other issues, maybe someone else on H1 can advise. We built the Wisdom Majestic 40 - moved in! IMHO, of course. Just a bit more information... These costs are for a 47sq double storey, BUT, the ENTIRE top storey is cladding, so that equates to ~25sq single. Someone has us firmly by the short and curlies! Retail prices for (per 1000): Cat 1 Selkirk Victorian Gold $673 Cat 1 Austral Access range, Cream $1001 Cat 9 Austral Elements range, Zinc $1567 First point of interest is the difference between the two companies Cat 1 prices. Second, now I REALLY don't understand how they can ask $21K for an upgrade. Taking the good with the bad, taking the good with the bad, taking the good... For us it was a no brainer as the cost to render the house was not much more than the cost to upgrade to a face brick and i really prefer render to face bricks, even if they need to be painted every 5/10 years DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair to do it properly you need to dig out the garden and waterproof the outside of the wall.
