Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 13, 2012 10:43 am Hi All, Just noticed that the East and South side of our home has insulation in the cavity wall and no in the north or west side??? I have no idea why this is the case.... Is there a reason for this. Should i look at getting all our walls done..... FYI Our home is north facing Re: Cavity wall insulation-why not on all walls in the home 2Jul 13, 2012 11:00 am What does it say in the inclusion listing ? All external walls now normaly require instulation to meet the new star ratings. Re: Cavity wall insulation-why not on all walls in the home 3Jul 13, 2012 11:29 am East & south are the cold walls, they're probably concerned with losing heat in those directions, which is why they'd consider them the most important.
Whether they've made a mistake or whether the other walls are left-out on purpose (and why they're not worried about undesirable heating through those warm walls) I don't know. Our builder doesn't do garages by default, so I presume garages aren't required to be insulated under the latest energy-efficiency ratings schemes (not garage walls are they?). Also - those walls aren't almost entirely windows/doors are they? Knowing how silly some of the BASIX requirements are, I'd not be surprised if insulation was required regardless of whether there's only 1sqm of actual "wall" and the rest of that entire side of the house was glass ... Re: Cavity wall insulation-why not on all walls in the home 4Jul 13, 2012 11:40 am Our builder is insulating the external walls only with the exception of the garage, where the walls between the house and garage are insulated. If it's an internal wall you usually only insulate for sound proofing reasons! But our builder doesn't do this as standard, and it's rare in residential, I usually only see acoustic insulation in office walls! 2 Re: Cavity wall insulation-why not on all walls in the home 5Jul 13, 2012 2:23 pm I've got it all around, also having my Garage fully lined and insulated and also sound proofing the Media room I would thing the Northern and Western walls would be the ones you'd want insulated in Australia?? Re: Cavity wall insulation-why not on all walls in the home 6Jul 13, 2012 3:12 pm hi mary, we have the cavity insulation from the games/bath corner on the south following along the entire west wall and then covering our master/portico wall on the north side. sort of looks like if you drew a line dividing the house in half from front to back, all the west side of the line is done. we're facing north too, so west side is where the living area is and exposed to summer sun, whereas the bedrooms are on the east side and we have left all the bush/trees along that wall. Re: Cavity wall insulation-why not on all walls in the home 7Jul 13, 2012 5:49 pm Roof and the external walls of your home are your protection from temperature changes (heat gain and heat loss). Think of your house as upside down bucket. It seems you have huge holes in your bucket and it makes no sense. Check out your energy efficiency report and ring the designer to clarify. Would this be the most common method and anybody ever had any problems down the track? 0 5142 Firstly, if your house is still under builder's warranty (10 years in Victoria) you should have no need to crawl into roof space but let the builder handle it, unless you… 3 5638 |
