Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 02, 2012 10:21 am Having paid the deposits for our block of land and our new home, we are starting to think more seriously about colour schemes, etc. Something that we seem unable agree on is the colour of the Colorbond roof. We both like a combination of grey and pale grey/cream/white render on the walls, but one of us prefers a dark (Ironstone/Monument) roof, and the prefers a light (Surf Mist) roof. Presumably a dark roof is likely to absorb more heat in the summer; how much difference will this really make? Someone suggested that the difference is likely to be minimal - maybe no more than 1 degree or so. Any thoughts, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Re: Dark or pale roof? 2Jul 02, 2012 10:50 am Where do you live? I think in NSW they recommend light rooves, while in Victoria we need to concentrate on heat gain to reduce our energy consumption. I think with good roof insulation it oesn't make that much difference. Re: Dark or pale roof? 3Jul 02, 2012 10:58 am Its actually very surprising and makes a big difference. There have been loads of experiements about this and there are international standards set to measure the temperature difference. I thinks its ASTM E1980 which is about heat refelective stuff but in a nut shell it is certainly more than 1 degree!!! I think in NSW they recommend light rooves, while in Victoria we need to concentrate on heat gain to reduce our energy consumption. I think with good roof insulation it oesn't make that much difference. We are in Victoria and in this, our 4th build, have a surfmist (light) roof. In the Summer the sun is higher in the sky and beats down on the roof-so the light roof reflects the heat more. Whereas is Winter when the sun arc is lower in the sky ( less on the roof and more on the walls) we gain the passive solar benefit from the sun heating the house via the windows on the north & east aspects of the house. We have the same level as insulation as our neighbours whose house faces the same way but has a dark colorbond roof-and they can't believe the difference in the comfort factor between the two houses. There are other threads on this Forum which discuss this topic and I suggest the OP has a look at them via the search function.
