Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 23, 2012 9:30 am If you had an option of doing full render to your house would you do it or would you leave it as face brick? Are there any advantages on rendering the whole house vs leaving the face brick? Thanks Re: Full Render vs Face Brick 2Jun 23, 2012 9:49 am Why pay more for something you are going to have to spend time painting in the future. Its a great way for builders to use up all the odd bricks, not have to worry about quality brickwork and charge you more. The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get ! Re: Full Render vs Face Brick 3Jun 23, 2012 10:39 am I think it's a matter of personal preference, not sure there's any significant positives or negative to one or the other. I prefer the look of full render mainly because I grew up in Northwest America where the houses are all wood and are painted. I find it softer looking and more uniform than having some render, some brick. The render they have these days is pretty good, the colour is in the render itself not painted over the top of concrete anymore so I don't think the maintenance is like it used to be. It's more expensive yes but like anything if you really want it, it's worth it (and it requires two different trades, and takes longer overall to complete so the expense is understandable) My house is being built at the moment, and I see no difference in quality of workmanship because I am having render. Re: Full Render vs Face Brick 4Jun 23, 2012 12:06 pm I love render, my opinion is it makes the home look cleaner and of a higher quality... Re: Full Render vs Face Brick 5Jun 23, 2012 2:13 pm Coming from a home owner and also someone who has been in home maintenance for years, my current house, build number 5 is face brick. And can I tell you, with all the issues i've seen with render over the years i'd never render another house. Hairline cracks in your mortar joints stand out like the proverbial in render. Expansion joints that are put there to allow for movement, show up as cracks in your render. And where your windows and doors join in crack. Around your eaves will crack, all we're trying to do is hold the bricks and roof together with no more gaps. I have seen some really bad render jobs but my parents house is fully rendered which was done 10 years ago and they have no cracks or discolouring... It has never been touched up as it still looks nice and fresh like they just got it done..... But just like with anything make sure the tradie doing the work has a great reputation:) Re: Full Render vs Face Brick 7Jun 23, 2012 4:08 pm Also probably important to note that you can get different types of render now. There is the standard cement render which is painted over the top (and liable to cracking, fading, bleaching etc.) and then there is acrylic render which has a plastic base, is impregnated with the colour and will expand and contract to the weather/house movement etc (or so I've been told). The dulux acrylic has a ten year warranty. I think you are pretty safe against some of the negatives mentioned if you go with an acrylic render.
