There is the standard cement render which is painted over the top (and liable to cracking, fading, bleaching etc.) and then there is acrylic render which has a plastic base, is impregnated with the colour and will expand and contract to the weather/house movement etc (or so I've been told). The dulux acrylic has a ten year warranty. I think you are pretty safe against some of the negatives mentioned if you go with an acrylic render.
