Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 18, 2012 1:29 pm What are peoples thoughts on size of bedrooms? Our house design will have two bedrooms and 1 master. But just not sure what size is really the minimum. Would want BIR for 2 bedrooms and WIR for master. What are your experiences on the size you chose for your new house? And are you happy? Thanks! Bedroom Size 2Jun 18, 2012 2:45 pm Our master is 4.5 x 4.5 but this doesn't include the WIR (separate room altogether) or the built in wardrobe. It is a pretty large room IMO. Our kids rooms are all 3.5 x 3.5 again not including their built ins and ensuites and we find them perfect for their needs. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Bedroom Size 3Jun 18, 2012 2:55 pm Edited because I find it insulting being called self absorbed and wanty because my opinion is 3.5x3.5 is a comfortable size room.
Quite happily kick my 6 ft 19 year old out of home instead of giving him a queen bed that he is comfortable in, and let him live on $8/hour apprentice wage and suck money out of the government because it seems opinions here are that's what I should do. People don't make it personal and allow people an opinion. Re: Bedroom Size 4Jun 18, 2012 4:33 pm Some people expect the world. I grew up in a 2.7x3.0 and it's not like it's a shoebox. Saying 3.5x3.5 as a minimum sounds pretty self-absorbed and wanty. You don't need a 16sq house. I'm sure people will try to justify why they need it, but the reality is they want it. 5 people can quite easily live in a 2br house. Now, what's nice to have? Sure, then you can start talking larger. A 6x4m bedroom would be lovely. But noone's going to die becuase they were forced to live in 3x3m bedroom. Re: Bedroom Size 5Jun 18, 2012 4:54 pm i agree wish akashra... people seem to think that every house needs to have heaps of rooms and all the rooms have to be huge... This was true of olden style homes, I grew up in a house with 4m ceilings and the bedrooms were all about 5x5m... Yeah it was roomy and spacious, but was it necessary? No way all I did was accumulate a tonne of junk. Especially now where if you want to build near the city centre the truth of the matter is the land is not big enough to build houses with huge bedrooms. I have down sized to a house with the master bedroom is 3.5x3.5 + ensuite and WIR and it is fine. And the other two bedrooms one is 2.7x3 and fits a bed, bedside table and small desk nicely with room for the robe... The third bedroom is a tad smaller and would be fine for a young child although I use it as a study as we have no children. If anything having smaller rooms (providing they are still functional) promotes clutter free living as there is no where to store the junk and also prevents people spending all their time in the bedrooms and forces them to shock horror act like a family and spend time as one Re: Bedroom Size 6Jun 18, 2012 5:06 pm My childrens current bedrooms are 2.5 x 3. They have very small wardrobes and so this size room is just not big enough. Also with the layout there is not much room for changing things. In the new house we are giving them 3 x 3.3 with large wardrobes. This space will be more than sufficient for their needs. Truth be told, if there was a decent sized built in wardrobe in their current rooms then that would suffice as well. Our current master is 3.3 x 3.5 and is fine (with separate WIR and ensuite). BUT I'm not a person who wants to 'live' in the bedrooms. I prefer smaller bedrooms, larger living spaces. In my new house the master bedroom is 4 x 4 which I think is enormous, but kind of had to be that size to fit in with everything else. Re: Bedroom Size 7Jun 18, 2012 5:08 pm We made bedrooms 2 & 3 - 3.2 x 3.2 with build in robes and think this is plenty of space. If ya kids want a Queen size bed then its time for them to move out. Our main room is 3.6 x 4.2 with WIR and built in robe and class that as plenty big. IMO measure the items you want in the room eg. beds/desks/robes etc, arange them out to scale on paper, draw a box around it all and then u have your minimum room size done. The master has a walk-in I would have liked the rooms to be bigger, but you have to build within your financial limits. And I wasn't going to take space away from other areas...I've been in a 3.4*2.6m room without a built in robe without an issue. If people want bigger rooms then fine. I grew up in a room that could fit a big desk and a double bed and that was great. I would like my kids to have the same at least. Their current rooms are much smaller and they share a room with the other bedroom being used as a study. I think they are both around 3.5 x 3.5 without much storage or wardrobes. The master we have now is about 6.5 x 5 including wardrobes and ensuite. I like the space and that is my right, it does make me wrong or right, it is just my preference. These threads evoke many emotions and comments of what is necessary vs what is want. Each to his own, I am fine if my kids want to stay with me as long as they want, they will always have a place (easy to say when they are 9 and 12). Of course no-one will die if they live in a smaller house but if one can afford and that's what they want then it should be fine. Also it would be foolish to build a 2 bedroom 16sq house if every house in the street is more than double or even triple that as you would be undercaptialising for the area and it could be a poor investment. I respect that some people like smaller houses and its also ok that some people like bigger houses. Rant over. Look at a lot of plans and you will get a feel what the minimum size is, student accommodation is around 2.5 x 2.5 or slightly bigger. I see lots of plans with ranging from 2.7 x 3 up to much larger. Ciao Mark Bedroom Size 12Jun 19, 2012 7:07 am As usual rather then just stating what people have, the thread turns into a sh!tf!ght. Seriously can we not as a forum just have a discussion without it becoming a n@rk-fest? We chose to have rooms of that size. We also measured our children's furniture and decided on that. Our children have single beds, a chest of drawers and bedside table. They have no toys in their rooms other then a few stuffed toys - all others are in the rumpus room. They do not have tvs or computers in their rooms, we do not have any formal areas, we are all together every minute not at school or work. I grew up as one of 5 in a 9sq home - 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom. Doesn't make me a saint or better then anyone else here. I chose to build a home with a bedroom each for my kids. My choice, didn't ask for your approval. Simply state your sizes like the OP asked for and move on. Seriously! Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Bedroom Size 13Jun 19, 2012 10:06 am How funny to make preferred bedroom size a moral issue. Surely we can all agree that people are entitled to use their houses differently. Small bedrooms (I would say <3.5x3.5) would put me off if I was buying a house. I would like to be able to fit a double bed, desk and robe in comfortably. If my kids are living at home until 26 then I don't have any moral issue with them using a double bed at that age. I grew up in a much smaller bedroom (2.7 x 2.9) and it was cramped and cluttered, but I was just happy to have my own private space and not have to share with siblings. So if I couldn't fit larger bedrooms in my plan/budget I wouldn't consider it the end of the world, just worry about impact on resale. Re: Bedroom Size 14Jun 19, 2012 10:27 am The bedrooms in our new house will be approx 3.0x4.2, 3.3x4.1 and 3.0x4.1 including BIRs. Master will be 4.3x4.0, exluding WIR and ensuite. It's still a work in progress so I can't comment as to suitability, and in any case they were the rooms that came with the plan we liked so we didn't think too hard about it But in general, I don't think there is an ideal or a minimum. The size of the bedrooms has to be looked at in the context of the whole house and the family using it. Re: Bedroom Size 15Jun 19, 2012 11:01 am Our Master is 4590x4200 thats not including the walk in robe. Second is 3200x3240 not including the walk in robe. Bed 3 is 3700x3240 Bed four is 4330x3200. All of these rooms have queen beds. These days kids stay home longer and really if they want a queen bed they should b able to have one. Our 12 yr old has a queen bed as do all of his friends. I grew up in a small home sharing a room but I also walked to School and didnt have a laptop, phone and ipad. Times r changing and u have to change with them. Get what u want, if u get something that doesnt suit u will hate it.
Re: Bedroom Size 16Jun 19, 2012 11:04 am Well hoping not to get the nasty posts, our kids bedrooms are all 3.5 x 4m, plus their own WIR, as is the guest room. The master bedroom in this house we are building is 4.8 x 4.7, plus WIR and ensuite. We downsized in this house as our master was bigger at 5 x 5.2 in the last one. We wanted a bigger kitchen! This house is also larger than the last. (55 sq under roof) The kids have their own area as do we. We prefer it this way as it gives some privacy in theirs as well as our lifestyle. Living rurally also size is helpful as I have no doubt that when home they will visit with friends, as happens now, and having the available space to cater for all of them will be good, rather than stepping over each other. One has a double bed, the other a queen. His feet hang over the end of anything smaller, as do mine! How long they stay is up to them. Our block is large, subsequently so is the house and the shed (16x9x3.6). Both of us were bought up in small houses. We now have the ability to own and build bigger. It is our choice what we build and the size we build, as it is your choice. And our 26yr old Son just moved out, and I would never expect him to sleep in a single bed. He bought a queen bed and it did fit in the third bedroom, with his cupboard and a tv unit. He had a built in robe. Aussie Mark, you are right, my Son has moved but he will always be welcome back, if he wanted to. I doubt he will, but our door will always be open. I was put off replying (as a relative newbie) because I didn't want to be called self absorbed or wanty. We can afford to have largish bedrooms, and that's what we want, so that's what we are getting. I can't remember off the top of my head how big the rooms are, but they are pretty decent IMO. I want small bedrooms to reduce 2 things... 1. cost and 2. our footprint on the environment. I don't want rooms bigger than they need to be. In saying this though. I do want the rooms to be functional so hearing all your thoughts has been fantistic! I have a great idea now of what size room I could possible have that could fit in a desk and bed. I like the idea of everyone being together but respect that some people will need their privacy! Keep the ideas flowing! If anyone has a drawing of a bedroom put it up!
