Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 10, 2012 7:02 pm Hi all, we visted lilly homes in march to get a quote for building a double storey house there base price for the style we liked was $222100. we were unable to build straight away due to family commitments. when i visited them today 10 june 2012 to go ahead with the tender process they told me that their price has increase by 5.8% or approx $15,000 due to the carbon tax.. i was expecting 3-5K. anyone have similar experiances?? should i look for another builder? Re: Carbon tax increase 2Jun 10, 2012 7:12 pm I was warned of an increase of 3%-4% by the Montgomery Homes saleslady we were dealing with, that's about the same amount of money as you've encountered for the build we were looking-at with them. If you don't shop around you might feel you've been gypped ... however, I'd not be surprised if what they've said to you is on the level. Re: Carbon tax increase 3Jun 10, 2012 7:19 pm it's just a massive jump in what i was expecting, i'm gonna shop around. at the same time i'll feel ripped off if i pay the carbon tax this year and next year they remove it. what's the chance will get some back if they remove it ( i'm thinking 0% ) Re: Carbon tax increase 6Jun 10, 2012 8:02 pm Well if you do that, don't forget that the sort of increase the builders seem to be talking about is only about the same as inflation ... so even if you put it off for a year until after the election & the next budget's delivered, things will probably just "naturally" have gone up by similar amounts anyway. Re: Carbon tax increase 7Jun 10, 2012 8:27 pm Any person or representative from any business that is trying to justify a price increase due to the Carbon Tax should be dobbed in to the ACCC. Personally, I'd like to see them hung, drawn and quartered. Think about this - how could any business proprieter, large or small, accurately predict that their expenses will rise by x amount? THE TAX HASN'T STARTED YET. They can only determine what the increased expenses are after they happen. It doesn't matter if anyone agrees with the tax or not, price gouging is price gouging, and something that businesses will always try to do. Dob them in, ppat. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Carbon tax increase 8Jun 10, 2012 8:46 pm I must say that I agree with Eager. Very well said. The carbon tax appears to be an unknown - no one seems to know what to expect and so I find it interesting that this builder can put a dollar value on the extra costs. The tax hasn't even kicked in yet! I would suggest that perhaps you look for another builder and just shop around - it doesn't hurt to do so. Maybe even chat to a buider openly about what their expectations are re the carbon tax...surely not all builders are adding lump sums to the cost of their homes to factor in a carbon tax that has yet to kick in? The building industry is meant to be a bit slow and so they should really be trying to get as much business as they can! Well that is what I think anyway Re: Carbon tax increase 9Jun 10, 2012 10:26 pm Very little of the build will be affected by the carbon tax. Steel is, but I don't think there is much more. The ACCC should be able to tell you what percentage a house price would increase due t the carbon tax. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 Re: Carbon tax increase 12Jun 10, 2012 10:52 pm That is ridiculous. Things r slow at the moment and there is no way that I would pay that much more. Its pretty obvious that we r all in trouble because everyone is going to start using the Carbon Tax as an excuse to rip people off. The business I work for is having to implement around 3-4% to cover costs. Considering this is a supply to the major supermarkets I can only imagine what Coles/WW increases will be...best Dillard get out the cheque book because our modelling has shown up to in some cases of 10% increases. This life tax is an utter joke, I just pray that it effects most those who voted this pile of incompetant, l y i n g (why is ly ing a forbidden word? Site run by the ALP lol?) & thieving pricks in. I can see almost every business ending up in court because they had the balls to cover the costs of this ridiculous tax on carbon dioxide. Anyway, another thing that is going to go up a fair bit is air conditioning. Steel is, but I don't think there is much more. Pretty much every component needs to be transported, though? The tax will not be applied to fuel. A big problem is that not everyone knows everything about the ins-and-outs of the tax. I certainly don't, but I did know about it not being applied to fuel. Having said that, everybody thinks the worst simply because they don't know for sure, and who better than businesses to take advantage of that fear by jacking up their prices and blaming something else? Geoff - Decophile. Re: Carbon tax increase 17Jun 11, 2012 12:44 pm That's right Eager, it's the not knowing. And there will b people that put prices up and blame it on Carbon Tax. We r all in for price hikes on everything and it's scarey. It's a tax that none of us want and it will hurt alot of businesses.
