Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 06, 2012 12:05 am I want to have the deck in my portico and alfresco for my new house. Builder ask me to credit of paving for these area. Anyone knows what kind of floor is better to do the deck for these two areas such as concrete floor, brick paving floor or just sand? Re: Deck in the alfresco 2Jun 06, 2012 8:36 am I think it's hard to say without knowing what the rest of the house is made of & how it's built! You will probably want the alfresco floor to be the same height as the floor inside the house next to the alfresco (or very close) - is that correct? So what is that floor made of - is it tiled, is it wood? And if it is wood, is it a wooden floor sitting on top of a concrete slab, or is the whole floor suspended off the ground (eg. maybe it's a pole house)? It's probably the most sensible to make the alfresco out of something very similar to the part of the house right next to it, so if the house is all on a concrete slab then you would probably just get the alfresco floor in concrete as well. Once you know what the "structure" of the floor in the alfresco is, you can decide what you want to put down as the flooring. Even if it's on a concrete slab, you can put down wooden decking on top if you want; or you can even use that plastic long-life low-maintenance decking which looks like wood (although I think it looks awful ). In our house we are having the floor in the dining/kitchen tiled, and our alfresco comes off the dining room so we are using the same tiles on the alfresco floor; we want it to feel like one large half-outside room when the big back doors are open. We do have to be careful to choose tiles which are not too slippery to use outside. The main reason we're not using timber decking for our alfresco floor is because food/drink drops down between the cracks, you can't get under there to clean it (our alfresco is at ground level), and the thought of all those cockroaches crawling around underneath gives us the heebie-geebies ...
