Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 02, 2012 11:00 am This is a question for those who have completed or are part way through their build. Are there choices you made which you now regret? Of the ones you regret, did you go against your instinct in making the choice? Mine is the bathroom cabinets - was talked into Ebony Macassar and I've had a nagging doubt ever since. Now I see them I really don't like the cabinets. Luckily the ensuite is Black Finegrain and looks so much nicer. There are other areas where my instinct won and we made changes. So pleased we did as we love the new choices. So my advice is always to go with your gut instinct and don't give way if you really aren't sure about something. What do others think? Re: Should you trust your instincts? 3Jun 02, 2012 2:05 pm A friend of mine has a huge open space living area with raked ceiling and huge windows, she had two paint colours in mind, Wattyl light green: autumn bushland and a darker green: Jungle trail, for one feature wall. The painter told her the darker wall would clash and she should pick something else. Well, she's in, and it looks fantastic!!! Everyone comments on it, including the painter (who painted it against his judgement). Sometimes even the "experts" get it wrong. I also wonder if sometimes the tile places push a certain tile or colour because they have too much stock in that colour? Or am I just cynical?? Re: Should you trust your instincts? 4Jun 04, 2012 10:50 am Nothing wrong with changing your mind! Mind you, as I've learnt it pays to do it early so it doesn't cost you too much. I think you're right though, sometimes your gut does play a big part in it and if it doesn't feel right, don't do it. When we went to paint our latest house I had some doubts about the main colour being too light so asked the painter to paint some test areas for me on the exterior - sure enough, it was too light so we went with the darker of the choices. Luckily I had a builder and painter who were happy enough to do this without making an issue of it. Not always the case! Good advice there. I'm personally hopeless with colours - have left that to my better half. That being said we've kept things quite neutral throughout the house. I find that it is easier to add colour through accessories than to make big choices when it comes to tiles and paints. If you get it right it looks fantastic, but a lot of times you get swayed by what it popular at the time and might not necessarily be what you want in 5-10 years time. Back in the mid 80's when my parents built, they fitted out their kitchen with Lorikeet Green benches and white/green tiles. Really popular at the time, but in the late 90's it seriously looked like Kermit the Frog had been put through a blender. When they renovated in 2001, they upgraded to the kitchen to a fairly plain white and mum added touches of colour through tea towels etc. When they sold the house in 2011 the kitchen looked like it had been installed in the past 12 months with the accessories reflecting the popular colour at the time. However I think that your first choice is always the right one, and like baby names, you should never discuss colours with your friends/family because they will sway you. Its your house after all - you have to live with it - not them! Re: Should you trust your instincts? 7Jun 04, 2012 3:44 pm atom_ute it seriously looked like Kermit the Frog had been put through a blender! Nooo poor kermit. That's blasphemous talk to me!!! I agree go the gut instinct. Which worries me as to be kind to DH I let him choose the bathroom & ensuite benchtop and I just don't know if I like it or not. (He also chose the laundry benchtop but I've already changed that ) Oh well I'm sure it will be fine. Just not stunning!! Re: Should you trust your instincts? 8Jun 04, 2012 4:02 pm Definitely go with your instincts, I was talked out of a few things and I sit there looking at it and adding it to a 'future renovation list.' The most annoying thing is the highlight windows in the bedroom, I asked for bigger ones and the drafties kept putting in smaller ones. Flipping the bathroom so I see 1/3 of the door frame from the hallway instead of the while lot. Hi All, I just wanted to close this topic out with an update. So we ended up agreeing to a number with the insurance company, and after an extensive amount of hand… 8 23403 Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive). Would require a mini… 13 39724 i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 16009 |
