Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 01, 2012 4:51 pm Just wondering if anyone can give me a rough idea of the per metre cost of cavity wall insulation. Thanks Re: Cost of cavity wall insulation? 2Jun 01, 2012 8:49 pm Check out ebay for some bargains, that's where I got our insulation from. As for pricing, it's a bit hard to say not knowing what rating or material you are planning on using. Re: Cost of cavity wall insulation? 3Jun 01, 2012 10:16 pm I am interested in this too, though I expect in my case, retrofitting an existing double brick house will be a PITA. What are examples of the type of filling people use for double brick houses? Is it bats or a loose fill? We were told we would have to upgrade our insulation or put insulation in the wall cavities if our house doesn't make the 6 star requirement, at our cost. I am hoping we won't have to, but if we do we will be pushing for free or discounted upgrade. I can't help with the cost, though. We only enquired as to how much the upgraded insulation would be ($4000odd), didn't think to ask about the cost of wall cavity insulation. Hey MegLeigh89, From the sounds of it your circumstances are not the best in finding out your requirements for wall insulation, but by insulating Double Brick Walls during construction, it will change your house. As a bonus, in the not to distant future, all houses IMHO will require a type of energy efficiency disclosure when selling. So having your house around a six star rating, will save you money on day-to-day running (if used correctly) and should make you some more when you eventually sell. It is cheaper to get six stars during construction than post construction. General you can have a Supply Only product, a flexible foil laminate being the most common, although there are some bulk types that might come along as well (builders will generally find the cheapest option to obtain compliance and the home owner is none the wiser!), or a Supply and Install product, currently only water repellent Rockwool is available, as far as i am aware. The main difference being who installs it, and support that is provided to ensure that it is done correctly, foils generally rely on a smooth parallel air surface on either side of the foil to obtain there R-value, where a bulk type, is dependent on heat flow resistance and thickness. I have probably kept this a bit too simple. We have been installing Rockwool Cavity Wall insulation to new and existing homes in Perth and the Sou'west for over ten years now. We are used by a number of builders intentionally and by many builders, unintentionally, who forget to install something during construction. A typical new single storey project builder 'type' house for us to do (Supply and Install) is about, $2,750-3,300 (incul GST), builders then put their margin on top of this. We use equipment, material and techniques developed in the UK and we have adapted them for local construction methods.
