Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Greenfish build -too much cracking? 701Feb 02, 2013 8:46 pm ^^ I wasn't thinking about the gutter overflow TBH- that hasn't happened here. We had a day where we hade 80mm+ in just over an hour a while ago and our gutters were fine-but the screen on the tank inflow didn't cope! Could you point out to GF the non-compliance point in your opinion? Maybe via PM would be an idea... Thanks Does anyone know where I can find out rain intensity for a certain day/period?? There were several 'concern' points highlighted, one of which DH had already said he wanted to do something about - that is the intake on the tank. So saying, we have done nothing about it, and have not experienced the gutter overflow despite lots of rain. It seemed it was just one of those freak downpours that caused it which is a bit of a relief to be honest! Bit of an update in case anyone out there still has a look in on my thread. Majority of our dirt piles are now gone, we only have the massive massive one left. We are slowly getting through it, and have already removed some 15 trailer loads but it's hardly made a dint! We have to move more to our backyard which we haven't built up enough yet, and also need to spread a lot through the whole front acre and a bit where all the idiots driving over our block instead of using the driveway left marks. Using the ride on is like riding a bucking bronco let me tell you. 4WD doing the lawns makes it very tiring... We have started planting some natives along the driveway. They are only tubestock so will take years to establish but there is no other way we can afford to do it really. How else can you get 60 trees for less then $100?? I am hoping to go and get some more bush/shrub types tomorrow - even though I have only planted 23 of the first lot.... We have a quote FINALLY for the back paths. We have been trying to organise that since Easter, but the concretor after taking 2 weeks to come and quote would not return our calls. So we finally gave up on him, called a new guy who came within 2 days, quoted within a week and will start the boxing end of this week! Hooray!! Once the pathing is done we can finish building up the back then get some grass growing and hopefully my house can stop being permanently covered in dirt. My windows can barely be seen out of, but until the grass at the front and back takes I'm not cleaning them as there is no point. A few months ago we had a colorbond fence put in dividing front from back. It's come out better than I thought it would to be honest! We have lots more pictures on the walls, and I have finally tidied up the study thanks to IKEA storage lol. I still don't have my snuggle chair or new sofa, and think that will have to wait for a while which I'm disappointed in. The house is working brilliantly, we are not having to use our heater much at all which is so impressive with all this very cold weather we are experiencing. So nice to see our efforts are paying off I'm sure there is more but that's all I can think of right now. I'm loving my house, but really can't wait until all the landscaping is finished, the constant filth is doing my head in. My girls loved playing in the dirt through summer, and now the mud but the extra work it entails is driving me nuts. Will be nice for our dog to have a nice yard as well, cleaning her up to come inside is a major task, and no matter how thoroughly we do it, her bed always seems to be surrounded by little dried up mud chunks. I have no decent photos on this laptop of the fence and smoothed over ground, so will hopefully pop back in sometime soon and give you a look. Re: Greenfish build - all going good 708May 26, 2013 2:26 pm Ha! Just popped in to change the title to see I'm 2 days off from the very first post on this thread! How times have changed from last year Re: Greenfish build - all going good 709May 26, 2013 6:28 pm Hey GF! Great to get your update. Sounds like you are well and truly over all the dirt. 15 trailers already sounds like lots of dirt! Landscaping can take time, but all in good time... Thanks for the post on my thread today too! The tubestock will take off quicker than what you think-after 5 years you will not believe how big they can get! As we're having a blend we've grown on our exotics and just a few natives which are very slow growing. For the rest it's the tubes! (and so much easier than lugging around huge pots)... Re: Greenfish build - all going good 712May 31, 2013 3:16 pm Thanks gals. The concretor hasn't turned up today. Why do I still expect people to come when they say they will???!!! Re: Greenfish build - all going good 713Sep 15, 2013 8:16 am Hi GF - I posted on my thread to say belated happy 12 month anniversary to you (thanks for your post to me) but thought probably better I post it here for you! How is it all going one year in? Any garden pics to share with us? I just posted a few of our garden and looking back to 12 months ago it is amazing how a bit of greenery and planting can make such a difference. We are having massive drainage issues across the middle of our land so the reveg hasn't even started yet. Once it dries out we need to dig it up and put agi pipe in several places to help drain away all the water. The front of the house needs a little more tweaking, although we have mainly grass growing there now, some of the dirt needs to get moved around so still can't plant there yet. The backyard despite getting 12 trailer loads of dirt needs as least double that still. Again, it needs to wait to dry out more before we can do it. Hopefully this summer is a bit drier then last year - I am happy to have to buy some water if it means we can get more of the landscaping organised. The plants we have done are doing ok - along the driveway, in the pebble garden and on the back batter - but as they were all tubestock they aren't very large. I'm happy that they are still alive though!! The fruit trees planted before we moved in are doing fabulous and the Strzelecki gums planted 2 years ago are going great guns. I am learning so much about plants, but it's time like this I wish we had a normal sized block not 2 acres, then we would be done and the kids could play outside without getting absolutely filthy every time. Will take some nice photos and upload them soon. Re: Greenfish build - all going good 715Sep 21, 2013 11:10 pm Looking forward to seeing your pics GF, it seems ridiculous that a year has passed already since you moved in.... and now you know how the house performs in all weathers. Overall, would you change anything? Re: Greenfish build - all going good 716Sep 22, 2013 10:00 pm Ooh yes, photos please!!! 2 acres is large, but how wonderful that the kids have that much outdoor space to grow up in. Sounds like you have some serious drainage issues to sort. All in good time. I will eventually!! House is performing brilliantly trees, would only change minor things - like the way some windows open, and also our laundry door opens outwards which is annoying. Our back portico needs to be closed off from the weather, but I'm glad we still have it there, just not sure how to change it. I definitely wouldn't get dark carpet again, such a nightmare to keep clean!! Although the master bedroom cops noise in the mornings from the kids I wouldn't change that as we built looking towards the future and I'm sure in a blink of an eye my girls will be older and sleeping in so that won't be an issue. I will get a sleep in again one day..... If I could go back in time I would have sorted out the driveway better and also insisted that the builders do proper drainage when doing the cut, so a lot of our problems could have been already fixed lol Honestly can't think of anything else, we are genuinely happy with the house yay! Such a lovely day today I might head out to the garden (ha! very loose term) with my camera once my youngest wakes up... Re: Greenfish build - all going good 718Sep 28, 2013 2:22 pm Hmmm I went to take some pics, but although my plants are growing well, as the were seedlings when planted they are only approx 30cm now (which is still good growth - some of them were tiny!!) but when I go to take pics, such short plants in such a large space, you can't really see them, so pics will have to wait a while - like maybe a couple of years - until some serious growth has occurred! Re: Greenfish build - all going good 719Oct 05, 2013 6:22 pm You'll find that once they've got their roots down they will power on. Sounds like they have, if you can see lots of new growth that's a sure sign Re: Greenfish build - all going good 720Oct 08, 2013 6:37 pm They are growing well - just not fast enough for me!! One of the ones I planted approx 5 weeks ago hasn't made it though. I even spent more and got a bigger plant in the hopes it would take, but this particular spot is just too wet. It's not the first thing to die there, and I especially chose a native that likes it wet too. Will try again in the summer and hopefully it can establish itself well enough to then deal with a lot of water over winter....
