Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 26, 2012 4:04 pm Builder wants to charge me an extra $700 or so to paint all my trim/skirting/doors etc a different colour to the walls. Is this common practice? Last house I built I was not charged for this. Our builder charged us $300 to have our architraves, skirting, doors painted different (white) from the walls. It's total crap, for want of $300. $700 sounds like alot, do you have a two storey house? Re: Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 3May 26, 2012 5:39 pm Is this a repaint or they want that to paint them from new? Ask them what in gods name does it cost any extra for? Walls are acrylic and woodwork is enamel and it costs no more to tint one a different colour to the other, or any difference to the painter putting it on. I've never heard of this before and it just sounds to me like a massive ripoff, call them on it. Cheers Re: Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 4May 26, 2012 5:45 pm almost certainly they will use different type of paint for the trim compared to the walls - I suspect they want to use the same colour so they do not have to be so careful cutting in. mgilla: some paint colours can cost more dependant on the pigments used. Re: Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 5May 26, 2012 9:02 pm We got charged $200 to have the ceiling a different colour to the walls (flat white!) and another $200 to have our skirts, arcs and doors painted gloss white. Painting the actual walls was a stardard inclusion. I felt ripped off, but we had to do it. Last build it was not extra either. Re: Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 6May 26, 2012 9:30 pm This is a new build. The contract actually specifies a gloss paint for the skirting so they acknowledge it is a different paint anyway even if the same colour so it defies my logic on why it would cost any more to choose a different colour- its the same amount of paint and same amount of work. I'll certainly be kicking up a stink over it. Build Thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=57639 Re: Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 7May 26, 2012 10:01 pm Makes you wonder what’s next? Once upon a time you got a house where everything in it was of decent quality and good enough to live in and everything was finished, you just moved in. How things have changed. The second storey, above the windows and above the garage door was always brick and now a lot of companies are using wooden planks and obscure glass was installed in all baths and loos as standard just to name a couple of things. When you go to a display home now you need to add $100-150k to the advertised price to get the house you’re walking through. Maybe the government needs to enforce truth in advertising legislation so the companies have to display the price you need to pay to get what you’re looking at. Will get off the soapbox, sorry for the rant but I feel for all the young couples trying to get their own place and get ahead but continually being stung by these building companies. Plucka you need to stand your ground!! Regards, Grumbles Re: Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 8May 26, 2012 11:52 pm plucka This is a new build. Yep Same with us, we got gloss paint, but to not upgrade would mean one colour for ceiling, walls, doors etc Extra Charge for painting trim/sills different colour 9May 26, 2012 11:53 pm We paid $570 I think to have our skirts, doors white, yes it's a ridiculous charge but worth it, I would have hated having anything but white (our walls are slightly, a off white) and there was no way I was painting it myself. They did try and charge us another $300 as they said that white needs 3 coats but the forgot to charge us and therefore forgot to put it on the plan. Your right, but its the base that has an extra cost. So if you go from a white base to B or Accent base it will cost more, but that would be no more than $10-$20 on a 10L tin of enamel. As for cutting in, I would put your house on it, the painters wouldn't get an extra cent. This is an absolute BS extra and i'd refuse to pay them. Plucka you need to stand your ground!! I really should stop reading these kinds of threads, talking about lintels, they installed wooden panels over ours in lieu of bricks, when the other houses build by the same builder around us have bricks over the windows. Had to fight tooth and nail to get them to change it. If you already have a contract, is the inspection cost stated in there? If not they would be forced to issue you a variation which you could of course object to. 12 22048 7 1848 |
