Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Ray's Adelaide build 121Aug 31, 2012 10:23 am Looking good Ray! I've never had a problem not having a window in my pantry-in fact light can be an issue for spoilage of foods. Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: Ray's Adelaide build 122Aug 31, 2012 11:57 am Wow, thanks all for the feedback... and so quickly after I've been gone for so long. You guys are awesome! We haven't gone into any detail on the kitchen design yet, I had the same thought about the fridge and actually am considering a narrow cupboard along the wall just to bring the fridge out. Maybe some wine storage or even one of those tall pull-out cupboards. As for the pantry, were going to go with lights instead of a window. We had considered skylights but I'd like to keep it dark for food storage. We will have the microwave in the bench so there wont be any cooking done in there. I am a little concerned about the depth though, I wanted a work bench to run the length of the pantry but it is only 1.2 meters wide which I don't think is enough. I think we either stick with 30mm shelves and a bench at the far end, or maybe make the room a little wider - any thoughts from people with walk-ins? As for the ensuite, there is 650mm between the shower and vanity, do you think that's enough space? The shower is 900mm so I don't want to make it any narrower than that. We settled on a compromise for the roof at the back of the house as you'll see too. The skillion roof was going to put a big dent in the budget so we've gone with a separate roofline and some nice skylights to get the northern light into the living space. They will look like this when installed: My building thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=56583&start=120 Re: Ray's Adelaide build 123Aug 31, 2012 12:59 pm Like the roof line..nice I would grab 50 cms from the kitchen area..you won't notice it but will make all the difference to the pantry having a bench in there as well as shelves ( don't do cupboards..pain in the ar$e) You can keep the toaster in there, charge the mobiles, have a fruit bowl, pens, paper..all sorts. A bench I recon is a must cos it makes the space so much more usable than just shelves. Have some deep open shelves below the bench for platters, and bread bin, and cook books and 10 kg of spuds and scales, and jams and stuff for near the toaster. And chopping boards and need I go on...... You get my point! Maybe have the bench half the length and then floor to ceiling shelves? I would hate to reach over my bench to get tins each time. I have a bench one side and shelves the other only which also has my crockery on. But I don't think you will have enough room. Mine is short and fat, unlike your long and skinny one Don't know about bathroom space. But do know you want a nice wide pantry. ESP if everything is open plan, you can hide the detritus in there Re: Ray's Adelaide build 124Aug 31, 2012 3:50 pm Here's some of the first selections. We like the grey carpet (its a solution dyed nylon), and like the look of these floorboards and the fact that they wont show a bit of wear as quickly as the perfectly flat polished boards. Just cant decide on which colour... My building thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=56583&start=120 Re: Ray's Adelaide build 125Aug 31, 2012 10:58 pm Hi Ray! Plans look excellent! I would move the fridge down to next to the hallway door and have the pantry door in between the the fridge and kitchen benchtop. This way you could either regain the Bottom wall of the pantry for shelving, or turn it into a linen cupboard in the hallway. Love the way you've stolen redundant space from the WIR to make a linen in the laundry! I wouldn't have a window in a pantry either, I'm with Dee. I like to keep the pantry as well-insulated as possible. Re: Ray's Adelaide build 126Aug 31, 2012 11:03 pm And I agree with Kiwi on making your pantry bigger as opposed to putting more storage in the kitchen . . . If we ever build again I will definitely be making the kitchen smaller and the pantry bigger. . . With a bench for the rice cooker, bread-maker, toaster, sandwich press etc, so that we don't have to pull them out into the litchen each time we use them, and probably a narrow lot of shelves on the other wall, for easy access to cans and stuff. Re: Ray's Adelaide build 127Sep 01, 2012 12:14 pm Hi CLO, I agree with Kiwi 100% about making the pantry bigger and the use of shelves. Our pantry is about 3000mm x 1350mm and has the features that Kiwi mentions. I do have a window, I hadn't thought about food spoilage but I guess I can use vege boxes for foods susceptable to spoiling. The light from the pantry window will also help put light into our kitchen as we are having a glass (obscure) door into the pantry. Anyway, here is a pic of our design if it helps. The low shelves have a bench top and are about 500mm deep, the tall narrow shelves are about 300mm deep. We have 3 double powerpoints by the bench (for microwave, toaster etc) and another near the end of the narrow shelves as I plan to put a small cupboard in there. We also have a phone point by the bench and plan to charge the phones in there so it will be very much a multi use room even though it is small. Anything deeper and you will lose cans! we also have our biscuit tin on the bench, calender hanging up, glasses/ mugs on a purpose built (bunnings) cupboard above half of the bench, kettle, and butter (we live in a cold country) on the bench..so that room is well used like dct mentioned. It may be small, but it is the most used room by the most people in the house. we also have our phone and answer phone in there. basically, everything but our beds and a sink. didnt want another sink in there. one was enough. enough stuff in there already!! Re: Ray's Adelaide build 130Sep 01, 2012 8:44 pm Nice teatowel that one. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ As you can see we have a bench in there and cupboards and drawers at the bottom and open shelves up the top. A couple of points I would make - if you can put a window in there, do it, particularly as it is so long and you may appreciate the natural light. Also as a side note, we chose a very similar carpet, a charcoal solution dyed nylon but it is loop pile, and I love it. One of the best decisions I made. Good luck with your build Re: Ray's Adelaide build 134Sep 04, 2012 12:53 pm Thats great thanks Lee, We're meeting with the builder again next week, and can make any final tweaks then. We're going through the selections now too, so I'll post up some pics of what we've chosen so far... For the ensuite: Basin (x2) Mixer tap (x2) Shower For the main bath: Basin - semi-recessed (x2) Taps (x2) Shower Kitchen sink (still not sure about this one, was the better half's choice) Internal doors (pattern) Front door is like this one but the panels of glass are random sizes. It's brand new so I cant find a pic of it... apparently were the first ones to buy it in SA. The other things are the kitchen appliances... so not really worthy of pics. Though we do like our new 700mm smeg oven and induction hotplate My building thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=56583&start=120 Re: Ray's Adelaide build 135Sep 04, 2012 8:38 pm Love my induction hotplate! Here is the Tle we are going to use as a feature in the ensuite, doing a spaced vertical strip on the back wall (next to the shower) like in this pic. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Here's a close up of the tile: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For the main bath I conceded a non-neutral color scheme. Seeing as we're planning on being in the house for a long time and we have two girls I thought I could give up the fight for neutral colors The plan is to have all white, tiled to 2m with some colored glass tiles placed randomly across the back wall. Something like this, but on a bigger scale and with nicer tiles. Using these three tiles (glass tiles) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We've tried to go with something a little different, so what does everyone think? Full bamboo planks, not veneers. I think they'll look and wear better. Cant wait to see them up And the colours of the random tiles are very nice too, I would say not too bold but enough to be a WOW factor https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43937&start=0 Bought a block in Golden Grove - Jan 2011 Finally finished our design, Mar 2012, *yay* Signed with ADH council consent June 12 Re: Ray's Adelaide build 140Sep 21, 2012 2:26 pm I like where you are going with this .... love the tile with the "bubbles" ... you are having fun and the girls will love their girly coloured tiles!
