Re: "Upside down" double storey house 23Mar 10, 2008 8:31 am I would check your local council's DCP for Residential Dwellings.
In my LGA you aren't allowed to have any living areas upstairs due to privacy and being able to see down into neighbour's backyards, rooms, pools etc Makes a lot of sense to have living spaces where the views are though, as long as you have good cross ventilation to catch cooling breezes and good insulation to beat the heat! When building a house it helps to throw around ideas but sometimes those not interested in building a house get sick of you - others building may too .
We are well aware of some people not being able to manage stairs. My father in law is quadriplegic so we would have a downstairs living area for when he visits and also for when older friends/family visit. We know this style of house wouldn't suit us forever, but that would be the case with a double storey house anyway. We actually visited a display home yesterday in the suggested style and quite liked it - not perfect but gave us an idea what might be possible. Re: "Upside down" double storey house 25Mar 10, 2008 2:16 pm I think it could work well if the views are worth it. My only complaint would be lugging groceries / babies up stairs but I have issues with stairs at the best of times
Be careful about your flooring in the upstairs area - I have a friend whose bedrooms are downstairs, and she can hear people pounding on the floorboards on the top storey of the townhouse NEXT DOOR! Just make sure you get enough padding between the two floors! Let us know what you decide! donuts Re: "Upside down" double storey house 26Mar 12, 2008 12:36 pm Well you could always try this design.
Flexible designs are easily catered for. Low up front costs due to the self contained componentary model, Low variation costs when compared to a standard builder Payments are probably negotiable. Woopy weed is included as part of the land block package I'd reckon, And accessible from your front window too I'd say Enjoy Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I'll go back to sleep now Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Steve Re: "Upside down" double storey house 29Mar 12, 2008 7:12 pm Hi Shaje,
We had the same discussion before we went to an architect to design our home. We have great views and the block would suit an upside down house but for all the reasons already mentioned( elderly parents etc) we decided against it but came up with another solution. We have both, kitchen and living downstairs, small kichen/bar and living upstairs. Our builder is putting in all gas, plumbing for our smaller kitchen upstairs...it wont look like a kitchen, rather like a snazzy bar etc This way, you can keep all options open...at least get your services there for future use. Could you tell I was in a bad mood yesterday Actually also in a bad mood today, nothing at all...apparently we are waiting for 2nd round of windows. What you said was so true, we had in mind split accomodation, for us and our grown up children when the time comes.
