Browse Forums Building A New House Re: show me your retaining wall 41May 02, 2012 9:52 am Hi Lex, No, I will be putting in pavers in those gaps. Both walls are 3 blocks high. I'll be paving in front of the bottom wall which will act as support and need to get more gravel for the top wall to do the same. Footing is 250mm deep compacted road base. I went about 150mm wider than the blocks on both sides (front and back) with the road base. 23 Aug 2011: Land settlement 14 Sep 2011: Block levelled 20 Oct 2011: Slab 3 Nov 2011: Frame 10 Feb 2012: Handover http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g372/Dazzab6/ Re: show me your retaining wall 42May 02, 2012 11:36 am To those that have built using concrete sleepers, how heavy are these things? Can 2 men lift them? I was going to do DIY treated pine but obviously concrete would be much better but do I need a crane to lift the things? I really like to build your retaining wall type in our rear yard. Can I ask how height your wall is and roughly how much it cost for your retaining wall? Thanks! The wall is 4 sleepers high at the back (approx 650) and 2 high at the front. We needed a few metres past the side gate so we continued with the wooden wall as money was becoming a bit short. I intend to have plants growing down the front of it and visitors park there so you tend not to notice it. The total length of wall would be around 36 metres and as we had heaps of other stuff done at the same time I would estimate the cost to be around $8k. Re: show me your retaining wall 47May 02, 2012 5:16 pm Thank you ladies for your appreciation of our selections. This block is in an estate about 8 years old and it is fully fenced with cream colorbond which I hate so when we first looked at the block I said NO! because of it. We wanted single storey and the area is so hilly and it ended up being the most suitable block so I have had to learn to live with it. When it came time to pick fencing I wanted something that blended in with the cream and ended up with Colorbond slats. I wanted something different for our mailbox and I have to admit I stole the idea from one similar whilst perving at other estates. Regards, Grumbles Re: show me your retaining wall 48May 02, 2012 6:52 pm Thanks, DazzaB ! Please do post a pic of the stairs once you put the pavers! Jessie87, that is some serious retaining wall!! How high is it? Was it the result from cut & fill from your nextdoor neighbour? Re: show me your retaining wall 53Jun 25, 2012 10:16 pm I am not sure how tall the moss rock is, I think 4ish metres and the grey wall is 1 metre. I am not sure what brand they used, but Creative Sleepers have similar ones. Re: show me your retaining wall 54Jun 26, 2012 7:41 am DazzaB These walls are 9m long, 660mm high each. Blocks were $3200 from Boral, plus about $800 for road base and gravel, and $100 for ag pipe and incidentals = $4100. I did it myself, and it probably took about 12 days in total (first time building a retaining wall). Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ My neighbour and I also built a concrete sleeper wall down our boundary. That was about $5400 for materials for a 30m long, 800mm high wall. Similar time for labour. What are these blocks called? They look like they have no mortar? How do they stick together? Did you still concrete the bottom one in with rio bars going through each block for footings? Also are they hollow blocks, if so did you fill with gravel or concrete? I have a 12m x 1m sleeper wall to replace and would like to diy and don't want to have to pay a brickie to lay besser blocks. They're a gravity-style wall so you generally don't stick anything together, i.e. the weight of the blocks (and fill) hold them in place, and they have nibs on them to stop them moving. At the corners where there are no nibs, and for the caps, you need to stick them together with liquid nails. The base is 250mm compacted roadbase, no reo, no concrete. The fill is gravel. 23 Aug 2011: Land settlement 14 Sep 2011: Block levelled 20 Oct 2011: Slab 3 Nov 2011: Frame 10 Feb 2012: Handover http://s1098.photobucket.com/albums/g372/Dazzab6/ Re: show me your retaining wall 56Aug 13, 2012 11:36 am Barossa Bubbles Hmm Good to see these retaining walls, I also need to do some around my house.. basically all the way, and have decidd on just cement paver slabs... one side will be completed within 2 weeks I hope so I'll upload a pic or few then along with the other sections I need to have done BB hey bubbles did you find any concrete sleepers in the barossa gawler area at a decent price? we were going to use cca treated timbers sleepers but concrete is really the way to go i'll need over 100 i reckon (will measure later this week) anyone else in the gawler barossa area in sa thats got a decent price on concrete sleepers for their yards? This is for the blacktown council in Sydney. We have a block of land where the retaining wall is 1.6m high. I am not too sure how high can the fence be on the retaining wall? Does it make much of a difference to have high retaining wall and fence? Does it obstruct the sunlight in any way with high wall and fence? Thank you again Simeon.. I will call my certifier for that.
