We had concrete footings poured for our two retaining walls today, which will then be bricked. I will take pics when I can. I had no idea how retaining walls were constructed, and I guess there are all sorts of different ways too.
Designs start: 4/12/09

Happy new year everyone!
We need to get a 20 meter x 60cm retaining wall for a garden. Considering a stone retaining wall (sandstone or bluestone). I am on clay ground in Canberra.
Can anyone tell me what footings I will require?
I want to do it right and do it once...
Thanks in advance.
Building is both exciting and stressful

Here's 55m (almost) of my steel post and concrete sleeper retaining wall. This front and side of the block (corner block), tiers the front yard for gardens and lawn and surrounds the pool.
This part owes me about $24k. I had the posts concreted in and I've done the rest. There's another 30 odd metres to go (20 on the back boundary and another 10 on the left hand side of the driveway. This should cost another $7k after splitting the back wall with the neighbour.

Yes, the ones that have had decent applications of waterproofing on them. Too often the builders or owners skimp on this and as a result water gets absorbed by the blocks after a while resulting in dicolouration. Sometimes also people plant gardens behind the walls close to the top of the wall height and if they add mulch sometimes the tannin from this can cause ugly brown marks.
