Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 05, 2008 11:02 am Gday all,
Just looking for my next project (9 months in a new house is getting a bit boring), I'm considering buying acres north west of sydney and quite a few properties do not have power or phone on site. Some have been advertised with power 'near' to site and some havent mentioned it at all. I'm trying to get some info on whats involved with getting powe/phoner to these 'out of the way' areas. I;'m talking places along the Putty Rd near Howes Valley , up near Yarramalong/Dooralong/Cooranbong and further north past Dungog. I'm know its going to be different for every block and I'm sure its gunna cost a motsa, but there has to be some guidelines and info on how to get it sorted. Can anyone point me in the right direction or know whats involved? Cheers Re: Connection of electricity to acreage property 2Mar 05, 2008 11:13 am Hi Shady, it is as simple as ringing up your power company and getting a quote. We built on a farm and the site had no power. Before we built we did our Due Diligence(as you are now) and got a quote. If it was 20k+ it would be a deal breaker and we would not have gone ahead. Quote came back at $850 Power company had to dig a 100 metre underground trench as well.
Also, talk to the local council, they would be number one on my list. It is not just a simple matter of carving up farm land to do developments etc Each area has different rulings. Good luck Mrs B Re: Connection of electricity to acreage property 3Mar 05, 2008 10:17 pm Quote: power or phone on site Hope you can drink those when you're thirsty if it hasnt rained for ages ' I have a knowlegde of that area - as well as living on the land - so make sure you understand all the issues & costs. I've been visiting these areas for several years now especially the Wattagans area. I do know that this area hasnt been affected by the drought any where near as bad as some others. Any pointers or things to look out for would be greatly appreciated. Re: Connection of electricity to acreage property 5Mar 06, 2008 10:42 am We are on acreage, but luckily had power already connected. I know neighbours of hours had to pay 20k+ to get power extended to their blocks, new power lines, poles etc. They were told if anyone else built out near theirs and used their lines, they would get reimbursed for some of it, but hasn't happened as yet. Phone lines with telstra costed $300, for about 200m of cabling, they told us it didn't really matter how much cabling was needed, that the maximum was quite a distance (well over what we needed) and that if you went over that, it wasn't very expensive per extra metre.
Don't know if that helps or not!!! Re: Connection of electricity to acreage property 7Mar 06, 2008 6:08 pm Shady, My sister put in solar system and is totally self sufficent due to the pwoer company saying $40K to run piower, and the contract said - no guarantee they will replace the lines if they are damaged by a storm.
Solar system cost her about $44K and no power bills or blackouts to worry about. and be careful re running landlines - why would you. ?
