Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Apr 05, 2012 11:23 am I'm in a dilemma. We are having a raked ceiling through our living dining area and at the moment we have two ceiling fans included - one in the living area and one in the dining area. However having just been in one house with a raked ceiling and fans I didn't like the look - all I could see were the fans and they just looked wrong even though they were vertical. However this house was unfurnished so maybe they stood out more. What would you do? We're also having ducted aircon installed so they aren't strictly necessary but my desire to be "greener" is conflicting with my desire for a house that looks fab, wow etc Anyone have any photos of a raked ceiling with fans? Have you thought about using hide-away fans? we are thinking about something like this? http://www.trendir.com/archives/003551.html Re: Ceiling fans on raked ceiling? 3Apr 05, 2012 12:02 pm Imo hide-away fans look ugly and I haven't seen hem used anywhere where they aren't the elephant in an otherwise nicely furnished room. If your issue is the fan's looking overly conspicuous hanging down from a raked ceiling then a hide-away fan isn't going to help in that respect because they standout even more. If the fan standing out is an issue then choose a nice looking one so that the fan drawing your attention does have at least somewhat of an aesthetically pleasing look about it. We're having both fans and ducted air con more for the functionality than the look. Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. Re: Ceiling fans on raked ceiling? 4Apr 05, 2012 5:31 pm Hi guys - this thread caught my attention as we too have a raked ceiling in the living area with two ceiling fans planned. We are just at bricks stage so I haven't got any photos, but I am curious now as to how it would look. I had always assumed it would look great - that sort of tropical feel. Plus of course MUCH better for reducing use of air-cons. cmhamilton has a good point about getting nice ones - we are planning on stainless steel. In terms of look, I have seen a few posh hotels and resorts that have raked ceilings and fans and I think it looks great. PS4314 - Do you have a photo of the house you just saw? I am sure once furniture comes it will look much more balanced. I think it's all or nothing for us. If we have them we will definitely go for nice looking brushed steel ones. No I didn't take a photo and I did say to my better half that I was sure once the furniture was in that we wouldn't notice them. However the show home has a raked ceiling with nothing breaking it up other than downlights and vents and I just love the look of space and height it gives. So I'm worried now that the fans may break this up too much. This isn't the only thing that we're second guessing our decisions on. But I'm hoping once we go to meet with the electrician at rough-in we'll be able to get a better idea of how it will look. And how big is the room? I am sure the fans will look spectacular. We have 3.6m high raked ceiling (down to 2.4m) and the room is about 9m x 5m. We are going to have 2 ceiling fans and 8 downlights. Once you get your frames up you will get more of a sense of how it will all look. I am a particular fan of fans, so my bet is they will look great! As several have said, if it's a nice looking fan, I can't see it being an issue. Re: Ceiling fans on raked ceiling? 9Apr 05, 2012 6:50 pm Hi everyone, we are also reluctantly having fans. But we need them to push the warm air down from the high ceiling (over 4 mtres at apex) in winter, the room is 9m x 8 something. We also have exposed beams. My choices were: 1. Go for broke and make them a feature 2. Minimise them- choose white to "blend" with ceiling 3. Blend them with decor (e.g. antique brass looks good with wooden furniture & beams; stainless steel with appliances, mod/industrial feel etc). My choice is between 2 or 3 now, because we've bought a chandelier for the dining table. (Rest of the lights will be LEDs). The chandelier is the focus, not the fans! Also our fans will be hung closer to the ceiling than standard length to maximise their use in winter. Re: Ceiling fans on raked ceiling? 10Apr 05, 2012 7:25 pm Hi there (greenfish and treeseachanger here you are again! We seem to have some similar features in our houses . treeseachanger - why do you say "reluctantly" having fans? Is it a requirement due to the 4m ceiling and by who? I still think ceiling fans are a beaut feature. Set somewhere in darkest Africa or Borneo, with chirruping cicadas, big verandahs, menacing crocodiles, wicker furniture, tiffin, natives with poison darts and Charlton Heston!! No, fans aren't a requirement, but recommended becos of roof height and dimensions of the room. Otherwise we will have to sit on the fire to get warm!! And yeah, seems like we might have similar taste in house designs. My house colours aren't exactly the current fashion, but I like what I like. . . (Actually, that is EXACTLY what we had in mind - steering clear of fad or trend colours). I know exactly the fans you like and I love them too. Our internals will likely have a modern look though, so likely we will go brushed steel. As for pushing warm air down, my father built a round house with 20 ft ceilings so he also has fans for that purpose and they definitely seem to work. The fans my dad has have two options - pulling the air up (for cooling) or pushing the air down (for warming). I think the usual fans with basic functions are for cooling. But you can get some fans that have the option. Having talked through with hubby I think we're just going to put a fan in the main bedroom and in the Alfresco - really don't want to have anything detracting from the ceiling. We have great breezes where we are and windows in places designed to give us cross ventilation so hopefully we won't miss them. If we do then we can always get fans retrofitted - think I'd rather do that than have them at the start and then regret it! Thanks everyone - great input as always. Glad you have come to a decision you are comfortable with PS4314 - I'm the total opposite to you - having them EVERYWHERE - Alfresco, dining, living, rumpus and all the bedrooms. T - I'm with you too on the brushed al for fans, I think they also tend to look cleaner for longer Re: Ceiling fans on raked ceiling? 17Apr 06, 2012 11:17 am greenfish T - I'm with you too on the brushed al for fans, I think they also tend to look cleaner for longer there we go again! They're Typhoon I think? and the blade is angled on one side. So what colours are u all having? My 'great room' is based on greens ( what can I say, fav colour- my Irish side is showing! ) and browns with red and goldish accent touches. Like this, but the green is sage green, the red more faded red, the yellow is pale gold and the chocolate brown is more mid brown. Uploaded with ImageShack.us Any suggestions on my fan colour? There's timber & antique brass, satin brass, white, black, stainless steel. I'm stuck. The only one I know I don't want is the white- will look grubby in no time SunnyT- here's our floorplan. Couldn't find your's on the threads? Our plan was very much to blend in with existing countryside and original cottages in the area. Actually it was one of the conditions of building there, but we are happy to comply. You will note we have turned bed 4 into a TV/computer room, so when the whole family lands in on us we can easily convert it...!
