Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 30, 2012 3:45 pm I am getting quotes for installing a double wing gate, the Merbau ones look really nice and will cost $1500, if I choose timber to do the same style of gate (horizontally slatted) it will cost $950. I intend to go with timber coz it's cheaper, my question is are there any timber paint that will give me the oily colour effect of Merbau? Is the paint expensive and how many times of coating I need to do for timber? The size of the double gate is about 2m long and 1.95m high. Thanks for your advise! I've used Wattyl water based decking oil that has the merbau tint put into it - it means that you really need to apply it carefully as brush strokes or drips really become more obvious with each coat. Hope this helps a bit.... Hi citystop, what timber do you get for $950? Seems a pretty big gap there in the prices. If you do want merbau look, you can try dwd intergrain tinted to merbau. tends to last a bit longer that deck oil especially on a gate where water doesn't sit.
