Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 28, 2012 9:07 pm Hi, I noticed there are a variety of external garage light fittings on ebay, some stainless steal some aluminium. Also the weather ratings differ, I'm just wonder if its worth going for something that is IP66 or IP64 rather than something that is 54. The light will only be sitting on the outside of the garage, therefore it will be exposed to all weather conditions, I'm not too close to the sea so I'm not worried about salt corrosion. Here are some examples: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/160766721660 ... 1423.l2649 Or the IP54: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/150778322631 ... 1423.l2649 Thanks Re: Outdoor garage lights - weather proof ratings - 54 vs IP 2Mar 29, 2012 10:15 am The key with the IP rating is the two numbers, the first is protection against contact of live parts and the second is water. IP54 is usually considered outside equipment, unless you plan to pressure wash the wall, IP54 should be fine! For the first number 5 is complete protection against contact with live parts and harmful deposits of dust, 6 bumps it up to protection against penetration of dust, there is nothing above 6 For the second number: 4 - Protection against slashing from any direction 5 - Protection against water jets from any direction 6 - Protection against conditions on a ship's deck, water from heavy seas will not enter 7 - Protection against immersion in water for a stated time frame and pressure 8 - Protection against immersion in water indefinitely at a stated pressure Re: Outdoor garage lights - weather proof ratings - 54 vs IP 3Mar 29, 2012 1:08 pm We are purchasing these up and down lights for outside.... Outdoor garage lights - weather proof ratings - 54 vs IP66 5Mar 30, 2012 12:37 am Yeah I've been "watching" these very ones on eBay for ages. They are so lovely!! Then I started reading about GU10 fittings and MR16.... Then I asked the seller if I could install them myself. They said no. So I thought about the light fitting charge, PLUS 2 LED globes per fitting, PLUS the cost of getting a qualified electrician to come out and install them.... All adds up and blows my budget Re: Outdoor garage lights - weather proof ratings - 54 vs IP 6Mar 30, 2012 6:43 am [quote="caz_770"]Yeah I've been "watching" these very ones on eBay for ages. The seller of the aluminium light said he could include halogen globes for free. I noticed LED's from china are extremely cheap but I'm unsure about quality so I will probably just get the free globes Have look at your house plans and you will probably find that brick articulation joint has been missed.
