Ok here is a draft of the front of my house - problem is I'm not sure if I like it

- -Do the upstairs windows look an odd shape ( roof line of first floor has dictated the shape) I would have to move the top floor forward to reduce roof line to fit bigger windows in.

- -Do I need a window put on the lower left wall (WIR, so I will loose inside shelving :cry:

) I would rather a balanced look from the outside

- -The portico I have asked to be widened so the right column will go over window in garage ie closer to garage door. I thought I would do this because it is stepped down and the window will not line up with others.

- -I have also asked for windows on lower level to be 3 seperate vertical windows instead of the double one shown.

- -I would like it to be rendered.

What are your opinions and ideas? Nows the time to do the deciding.

Hi Paula

- Upstairs windows look great.
- not sure about lower l/h wall. Perhaps.
- rendered is good. You don't have to go to the expense of building with brick if you are going to render.
- the r/h garage roof looks a bit odd to me.

Answer – These windows are used all the time, I think they look fine.

Answer – I wouldn’t put a column in front of a window.

Answer – All of it? Depends on the brick you are using.

What are your opinions and ideas? Nows the time to do the deciding.

Answer – Looks good to me. Perhaps render the portico only??

I see what you mean,

This is like that because this garage is set back from th first one and therefore has its own roof line. It makes sense when looking from the side elevation. There is also a door leading out to the back from the first garage which creates a u-shape (for want of a better description) between the house and garage roof line.

Do you think making it a flat roof would look better?

Would a window in your WIR be a good idea? I suspect your clothes would fade faster due to sunlight coming in.

This is like that because this garage is set back from th first one and therefore has its own roof line. It makes sense when looking from the side elevation. I think a flat roofline on the garage could look better from the street.

You already have a few pitches on your roofline.

As for the render I am really unsure of what to do. At first it was going to be top half ans portico only, then after seeing some lovely rendered homes we thought all of it with two different colours?

will this be too much?

I was more concerned about the type of window covering I would need to have to hide the clothes from the street..

Paula….professionally…. I would say one colour only for a rendered façade.

You could make the portico a different colour, but for the rest of your home one colour only. It looks classier this way.

I'd like to see your floorplan before answering that one? They look okay...are they all bedrooms??? Is the light from those windows going to be adequate to light up the rooms?

No i don't think you have to, it would look nice, but not a necessity

I would say lower these windows which would elongate the look of that area eg. floor to ceiling windows or close to it?

rendered would look nice, 2 colours perhaps, then the portico, WIR section and the end garage could be one feature colour....maybe????

Can you show us a floor plan???
Is your garage stepped? Is that why the roofline varies? If so, which one is forward? Can i ask why you have the double garage on the outside..is it to line up with your crossover? Usually you see the dbl garage next to the house and the single garage on the outside?

I don't believe that your garage roofline needs to have the point in it to achieve the pitch you desire...

Sorry, lots of questions???? But can't wait to see it all come together!!!!

Yes the garage is stepped down two steps.
the single garage is forward - it is actually a double with the internal staircase cut into it, thats why its the single (that sounds strange - the stairs will be behind the window) the second is stepped back due to boundry - you will see from floor plan.

I made the garage door to be single so I didnt have so much 'garage' at the front of the house, there will be a workshop in there - my DH races go karts hence the need for all that garage space- -(I got the his and hers WIRs

)

i will work on posting the floor plan for you tomorrow - it will take mw a while to scan it to a picture - I am still making internal changes so it isnt the final one.

Two will be bedrooms and one will be part of the rumpus. the bedroom with only one window in it, is the guest room so they will have to live in the dark

the other bedroom will have a window on the left side of the house for more light.

Will work on posting the floor plan....will be interedted to see what you think..

Paula, I've never heard of or seen a window in a WIR, in any house or any floor plan and, leaving aside whether it would look good from the outside, I don't think it would be very practical inside, you want to make the most of a relatively small space and you are never in it long enough (are you??) to worry about using electricity by not having natural light.

Well my house has a 2 x windows in the walk in robe, and the only time I use the electric light in there is at night and dark winter mornings.

Paula - My main comment is - wow that is a lot of lovely northern sun your giving up there.
While you're trying to make it look balanced see if you can take advantage of that great aspect and utilise some natural warmth as well.

Helyn, we have 2 windows in our WIR. One for the front facade which is 600 wide and one on the side wall (developer's requirement) which is 300 high x 1800 long. Check out my blog if you want to see it...It's the window on the RHS of the front facade of our house. A lot of houses now have them. :wink:

We also have a 600 wide window in our ensuite and another in our WIR. But now you mention it Helyn I think it is a good idea to put up blinds to protect the clothes and carpet from the sun. Apart from the fact that I'd like a bit of privacy when getting dressed

OK, I stand corrected.

I've looked at a lot of floor plans and been to display homes and house inspections and don't recall ever seeing windows in a WIR, come to think of it, they often don't have outside walls, but fair enough, obviuosly I haven't seen everything.

DeeElle, do you have a very large WIR?
Never having had one myself yet, but I imagined just storing clothes in one, not actually getting dressed in there?

I personally would prefer some sort of natural light coming in to a WIR - otherwise clothes can get a bit musty - plus then you always need to turn the light on!

I have always struggled to understand the northern aspect...North points to the top left hand corner, I was told to put our alfresco in the position we have it to utilise the light. Is this right? (see floorplan.)

Does that mean the front of the house will be dark and dingy?
