Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 11, 2012 5:02 pm Hi! Just thought I'd drop back into this forum after finally finishing our place and living in it for a year. We built with Clarendon and were generally pretty happy with the process. This post is about Austral's ColourBrick range. We decided to go with this as we didn't want to render and we didn't want a bagged look on our bricks and we thought the Colourbrick was a good way to go to give the house a clean modern look as the bricks and mortar are stained the same colour. That's what we were told. The bricks are suppose to be a special brick that absorbs the stain so it's better than just painting on regular bricks. Here's what we are coming up against now. A year on. 1) When trying to clean the bricks (following the instructions on Austral's website) we used a garden hose on jet setting and found that it was stripping the paint off the bricks. We're trying to remove some stains from mud and concrete splatter. 2) We built a retaining wall with the same bricks and colour applied and are coming up against an efflorescence problem. That's not an issue as you should just be able to brush it off with a brush and make sure you resolve the water issue. Except when we tried to brush it off (dry conditions) with a brush bought from Bunnings for bricks and concrete, this also took the paint off. 3) Nawkaw have pointed their fingers at Clarendon for a part of our house where again the paint is coming off as the mortar that has been applied isn't the right mix (?) or something. If we had known that choosing Colourbrick meant we were so restricted with maintenance we would not have gone down this road. Further it is against their policy to supply any touch up paint. Frankly, the ease at which the paint is coming off makes me think that it's just paint on top of a brick and that the colourbrick is no more absorbent than any other brick. Re: Austral Bricks ColourBrick NawKaw Not Recommended! 2Mar 16, 2012 6:04 pm Wow, sorry to hear you are having such issues. I hope Clarendon or Austral come to the party and fix the problem for you.
