Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 10, 2012 9:12 pm Anyone been living with one of those recessed niche shower shelves in their shower? If so, what's it like? Knowing what you know now, is there anything you would do differently? And how easy it is to keep clean? We're thinking about it, but we're not sure how easy it is to keep it clean. Also not sure how deep is useful. Please feel free to post a pic! Thanks Peta 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... recessed niche shelf in shower - does it work? 2Mar 11, 2012 7:29 am Ours is around 2000 long x 400 high x 100 wide in our main ensuite shower. Been living in our home for 2.5yrs no problems. Great for keeping things off the floor of the shower. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: recessed niche shelf in shower - does it work? 3Mar 11, 2012 8:09 am We put one in the bathroom we renovated to give it a modern touch, it was fantastic, best thing we ever did. It kept everything organised in the one spot, no more having things sitting around the bath (it was a bath/shower), no more bending down to pick up shampoo, and no more hideous shower tidies hanging around the shower head that would get grimey. It was easy to just take things off and give it a quick wipe. One thing we made sure we did was measure the height of shampoo bottles to ensure they fitted in there, some builders supply ones that are too small to hold anything! Looking forward to having them in the home we're building! Built the Seaview 36 with Rawson Homes - Read about it on my blog http://lamaisondemorgan.blogspot.com.au/ Re: recessed niche shelf in shower - does it work? 4Mar 11, 2012 8:54 am Just make sure (if you can) that it is waterproofed properly. Water will pool a little in the recess from time to time and if it is not waterproofed properly (especially at the joins) then it will cause you problems and cost you big $$$ down the track to rectify the resulting water damage. Some people apparently have nothing better to do than comment on other people's sigs. recessed niche shelf in shower - does it work? 5Mar 11, 2012 9:15 pm I wish we could have one but our builder won't do it due to waterproof issues and I can't do it after the build unless I remove a whole wall of tiles and it's just too expensive. They just look so nice and are so practical. This friend can't recommend them highly enough, but says to watch what the tiles are capped with as they went a colour capping originally and it flaked off. They have gone stainless with their most recent build. Re: recessed niche shelf in shower - does it work? 7Mar 13, 2012 7:45 pm Peta - here you are again! You have been busy on the forum recently! Great thread as we are just in the process of thinking about our niche. Great tips about the water proofing. kyton - 2000 long is amazing. Do you have a photo? The thing we are trying to decide is the height from the floor. gogo (on another thread) was looking at this a few weeks ago. I think standard height is around 1400-1500. (My DH is extremely tall, so just tonight we were wondering how high to place it from the floor. We are thinking 600 length and 300 high to give enough space for bottles and things). We were thinking of the same size because it's easy enough to get a single feature tile to fit - no extra cutting. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! But our builder went bust pretty close to the end of the build so you can't really use their prices as any guide LOL. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: recessed niche shelf in shower - does it work? 17Mar 15, 2012 11:16 am We put a niche in the main bathroom ( slightly higher than Rowena's above) and a glass shelf in the ensuite.
