Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 06, 2012 9:34 pm Hi, Ok, my dilemma is this: The display home we went to see had a grand staircase that had a stain colour rather than painted. At this stage, our house is only a couple of weeks away from completion, & the sraircase went in last week. Painters went in yesterday. I get a call from the SS telling me that the stairs & railing cannot be stained in the colour we want cos it's made out of pine rather than the expensive stuff that can be stained. My question is this: Is it true you cannot stain pine? it can only be painted? Staircase made of Pine? 2Mar 06, 2012 11:42 pm No, pine can be stained. But it is problematic. It does not tend to stain well, often going very blotchy as certain areas take the stain more readily than others. It is the nature of softwoods to cause these types of issues and I suspect that is what your builder is referring to. There is a method that can be used to minimize the risk of the stain going blotchy but it is not foolproof and takes time. But leaving that aside, a pine stair tread is going to end up looking terrible in a short period of time, pine is very soft and wears badly. The painters have recommended that we paint them with wall paint, problem is, we now need to find a colour that is close to the stain colour ( which I know will be hard to do ) . Not only that, we have carpet on layby , & the colour we picked contrasted the stain..... not very happy at the moment it's all too much of a headache! Staircases and sausages.
