Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 01, 2012 2:47 pm Our new house was done using an acrylic texture render, the renderers did a great job, only to have it ruined by the other trades. The color is impregnated into the render, it was supposed to be matched to Colorbond's Deep Ocean, it came out a little darker but we liked it anyway. The render was scuffed up, splashed with concrete and a hole was made when a chipped brick was replaced. All this on the front façade! I have just been informed that the builder plans to paint the render to fix it up, rather than re-render. I have a few concerns with this and a few questions: Is painting my/their only option at this point? I realise the render is quite thick, so putting another layer over the top might not be doable. Could the render potentially be removed and re-done? Cost be damned. If they go ahead with the paint, I assume they need to use a speciality product, but will the finish last as long as the acrylic finish should have? Has anyone dealt with these issues, any render experts out there? Cheers. Re: Painting over acrylic texture render 2Mar 03, 2012 11:46 pm Hi Cray. That is the issue with texture coat. The finishing trades need to be very careful or you should leave the final texture until the very end of your build. Any damage to texture coat can't be patched. You need to re-coat the entire section of wall. If you have paid for texture then I'd be holding out for them to re-do the whole wall. Paint has a different look to texture, it just doesn't have the same depth that texture coat has. You may as well have paid for painted cement render. You will still have the benefit of the flexibility of the texture coat but not quite the same look. Having said that, the complete system from dulux includes a paint (acratex 955) over the top of the texture any way (not that many people do it) so the builder will probably tell you that it will look the same. Personally I'd be telling them to re-coat the whole wall that needs patching. The actual texture is only a very thin trowelled on coating so there shouldn't be a problem with build thickness. I will be checking my contract and specs carefully to make sure acrylic was specified. But it sounds like we may be in for some lengthy discussions over this one. Thanks mate, is there a standard off the shelf type breathable product I can apply DIY? Thanks 2 8214 Hi Alex, Thanks for the reply again. I had a chat with the builder, he said he will use primer, then hydrotec which comes with colour and sealer as well.
