It was a saving of about $500 and a pretty good price for what we got, it also seems to be pretty decent quality. Haha Spottie, thank you!! It definitely is going to be a party deck! Can't wait to sit back and relax on it. We put in 9 solid hours of work today so all the slats apart from about 5 are done. Then just a few thousand more screws I have a slight obsession with owls too, they feature all over our house I promise some more pics once we've cleaned it up a little. Might be a while before we stain it though, it's going to be a big job in itself! All the decking is now laid, just a few thousand more screws to go in but we'll chip away at that as we can. Then I'll try and build up the motivation to stain it all! I have to say the picture frame really makes the deck look extra beautiful it also needs sides on, but we'll eventually put garden beds around and steps at the diagonal so might leave these until then. Some pics for now, excuse the messiness. http://i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u509/kjw7/2802628B-3EAE-49C9-B55E-EF4843D5C0A6-3745-000003F43AD9B6E1.jpg http://i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u509/kjw7/038C597D-5D97-4248-A58C-DD439F411E93-3745-000003F4458A23B2.jpg http://i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u509/kjw7/1E8F925B-AC3C-4629-8351-7628885E917A-3745-000003F450347118.jpg Kayla Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 589Jan 04, 2013 8:16 pm the deck is fantastic. are you looking at shade sails for the roof Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 590Jan 04, 2013 8:29 pm We're eventually going to do a gable colour bond roof of some sort. Just a matter of saving some money to afford it. The roof will cover about 2/3 of the deck, the rest (outside the stacker doors) will just be a sun deck Kayla Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 591Jan 04, 2013 10:35 pm Wow - its looking amazing Our first home... viewtopic.php?f=31&t=60460 Land Dep paid 26/2/12 Site cleared7/12/12 Slab 20/12/12 Frame 25/1/13 Bricks 19/2/13 Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 592Feb 04, 2013 9:36 pm Hi kjw7!! Have been reading your entire thread over the last couple of weeks and can I just say WOW!! You guys have done an amazing job! It's awesome to have been able to read your whole journey, it's prepared me a little for what we'll be going through! We're actually waiting for our block to settle in Drouin (due in June, we bought it off the plan in Feb last year!) and had our plans finalized by Hotondo in Warragul by the EOFY so we could still get the full FHOG - so we're just playing the VERY long waiting game now! I have similar ideas to what you guys have done, so some of our styling etc will be the same haha! I want our front portico decked as well as our alfresco, with the picture framing! I got that idea off watching the block last year! Our colours are also similar but vary a bit, our walls are a browny colour (between light-medium brown - but edging closer to light brown so it doesn't darken the house too much) and our kitchen will be 2 tone with a white essastone benchtop, black tiles with brown flecks through them & medium brown carpet - just to name a few haha! Neutral colours like yours though. I'm sure by the time we start building (which should be around this time next year-ish) I will have waited patiently for so long that I'll be tearing my hair out just wanting to have it done! Anyways, thanks for putting it all up on here so I can get myself ready for the roller coaster ride that is building your first home! Keep up the good work =) Kimmy87 x Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 593Feb 05, 2013 9:12 am Hi Kimmy87, thanks for taking the time to read my thread! I think you've chosen well with your builder, we've been through their display home in Drouin, it's beautiful! Fingers crossed those titles come through for you nice and quick. I'm not sure I could handle waiting so long, you must have so much patience! Your selections sound great, you should start a thread once it gets a little bit closer, I'd love to have a read of your story One bit of advice I do have to give is don't rush into paying the final payment so that you can move in. Make sure everything (and I mean everything) is completed before you hand over that final cheque because it is so hard to get them back again afterwards, or so we've found. Tradies obviously don't prioritise a small bit of painting or plasterwork etc. and therefore it takes them FOREVER to come back. We're still waiting four months later for things to be done that should've been completed before we moved in. It very disheartening and is a bit sad because its put a lite bit of a dampner on our experience with the way our builders haven't followed up on things or done anything by the time they said it would be done. We're constantly chasing them and are getting pretty over it. I don't want to worry you by any means, but hopefully you and others can learn from our experience! This forum is definitely great for that Kayla Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 594Feb 05, 2013 10:02 am Thanks for the advice! I think you may have commented on my thread once before, I made it after we'd decided on the design we were going to build lol. It doesn't get much action at the moment but once things start happening I'm sure I'll be commenting heaps! We've definitely made a great choice with our builder, we're currently renting a house that they built and it was brand new when we moved in - so we had a fair idea of the quality of their houses. We also looked through a house that was just about to be handed over (as it was the design we wanted) and after seeing it plus talking to our landlord and another friend that built through them, we were convinced to sign up with them. Didn't even look at any other builders! They're a little more expensive than other builders in the area, but their finishes are immaculate, they support local businesses and have won the national franchise of the year twice in a row, amongst a number of other local awards etc, how could we go wrong lol! Plus - I've gotten a job with them since we finalized our plans, will be starting with them around May hopefully lol! I definitely hear what you're saying re: final payment, our bank manager suggested the exact same thing =) Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 595Feb 05, 2013 12:01 pm I thought your name and everything sounded familiar! I do remember your thread now haha well hopefully it won't be long before you have more to post Congrats on the job, how awesome being able to work for them as they build your house! You will definitely be able to keep an eye on things pretty closely. Fingers crossed it all starts happening soon Kayla Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 596Feb 17, 2013 8:51 pm After what seems like forever we finally applied the first coat of stain to our gigantic deck today! We have only just finished putting all the screws in yesterday and then continued on to sand each and everyone of them. It has been a massive effort that's for sure! And staining it is proving to be just as huge. The first coat took 3.5 hours in the extremely hot sun, trust us to finally be ready to stain it on a 30 degree day! We also managed a second coat to the picture frame this afternoon and will hopefully be finished with two more over the next couple of days. Here's a pic for now, will post another when its complete. http://i1071.photobucket.com/albums/u509/kjw7/AFDEB2E7-3C7F-49FA-A2BD-A42A4D37E935-1259-0000023DCDF38EEB.jpg Just need to stain the posts, add the sides and some steps and probably just shade sails for now and we'll be done. Now where's that money tree when you need it? Kayla Re: Our first Home - DECKING COMPLETE !! *PICS* 597Feb 20, 2013 8:20 pm Oh. My. Lord. LOVE!!! We're pretty in love too, it's amazing the difference a little bit of colour makes! I actually did the second coat today, took ages as I did it all on my own but we're getting there one more coat and it should be complete it's hard to get a good photo in the afternoon but I'll try and get some better ones once its finished. I know decking isn't everyones cup of tea, but I just love them. I think they make homes look that much more amazing, and it always seem like they are finished off a little better compared to concrete etc. (what we will be having lol). While I love the look of it, I'm not sure we'd do it again actually. Unless we could afford to pay someone to do it Concrete can still look really good and it's definitely a bonus that you don't need to restain it every year!
