The paving was done soon after we moved in about 10 years ago and although laid professionally using a good base (including some membrane to stop weeds growing between) and were sealed, they are looking pretty tired even once cleaned with a pressure hose. Also the membrane has stopped being effective so we have some weeds growing between the pavers. Admittedly this probably wont be an issue if you are using concrete between all the pavers; perhaps thats the norm with a driveway but if its going to be sand inbetween the pavers at least expect some upkeep time down the track. On the otherhand the ugly concrete drive just keeps on keeping on without any attention needed. Perhaps you could compromise and get a stencilcrete pattern to resemble the pavers you were considering. http://camdenbuild.blogspot.com.au/ by invite only please pm me Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 4Feb 22, 2012 12:49 pm Thanks Robbie55 , your input is greatly appreciated. amgsl55, yes actually if we go for concrete we'll go for exposed agg or maybe coloured concrete to match the roof Built the Monaco By Dechellis / SA https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=49855 Slab: 07/11/2011 Handover: 23/04/2012 Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 5Feb 22, 2012 1:59 pm We have coloured concrete to match our roof also... I just liked the clean/smooth look. If you have coloured concrete just make sure you seal it so it keeps the colour. Our concreter is supplying the sealer and we'll do it ourselves. DH found some gorgeous pavers and the paving guys (Dave at Spot On Paving) have done an awesome job - what's been good as well is that we had to take up a row of pavers to put the watering in (nobody told us before) and when we have the pergola put in next week they can easily remove where needed and can be put back. You should see how he has cut around downpipes etc - done such a neat job. I can take some piccies if you like. My brother who is a concreter actually laid some pattern pave for us out the back under the verandah and did such an awful job we were glad to sell and get away from it. It didn't take long before it started cracking too .. Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 9Feb 22, 2012 2:33 pm Thanks McLaren, we had concrete driveway in our old house as well and cracks everywhere...that's the reason why i like pavers I am thinking of greyish color to match the roof and cream borders to match the bricks Built the Monaco By Dechellis / SA https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=49855 Slab: 07/11/2011 Handover: 23/04/2012 Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 10Feb 22, 2012 2:37 pm I'm currently in the same boat making this decision but leaning towards the paving option at the moment. Am also currently living in a house with old cracked concrete driveway. Have also been told as exposed aggregate wears the stones loosen and looks bad where your tyres drive every day. Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 11Feb 22, 2012 3:03 pm my parents have a concrete driveway they did 25 years ago - no cracks. I think the issue of cracking of concrete is related to the quality of the concreter and the job he does, the preparation, the reinforcement used, the timing between delivery trucks and the strength of the concrete used. We will be using a 32Mpa concrete for our exposed aggregate and the concrete plant is 10 minutes away. Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 12Feb 23, 2012 1:44 am If you can afford a quality exposed aggregate job that is the best way to go and I think it looks very nice. @Mclaren, The paver did a great job keeping the exposed slab edge and a min distance of 75mm below the weep hole for termite inspection. I have read that you can paint the slab edge the same colour as your brick if you prefer but it must be water based paint and has to be a thin coat no greater than 1mm. More information can be found here- http://dlgp.qld.gov.au/resources/newsletter/094.pdf Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 13Feb 28, 2012 10:55 am It really depends on what type of budget you are working with, and what type of surface finish as well - Paving will be more marginally more expensive, but generally gives a much more pleasing visual (at least in my opinion). Being a bit biased, I would say Paving is definitely the way to go - being in the industry has given me a certain appreciation for using Masonry as a whole - in fact, I'm about to swap out my existing stencilled Concrete driveway for Paving (the driveway is full of large cracks, but I dare say it was how it was poured in the first place that has caused it). Just keep in mind a few things if you do decide to use paving - you will need at least a 50mm thick paver, and depending on what part of S.A. you are in, some councils are now "requesting" that you use permeable paving in driveway, so it may be best to check with your builder & / or council first. Edit: Actually........ what size paver are you planning on using from those pictures (or is it just purely the colour)? The only reason I ask is that the 400mm x 200mm in the top picture aren't generally recommended for driveways if you were considering them. Re: Concrete driveway or Pavers??? pls help... building in S 16Feb 29, 2012 8:17 pm Adamweeks we are only using the colour pattern we were quoted with 200mmx 200mm don't know if the smaller ones just like the border 200mmx100mm are better. Any inputs? That sounds about right - normally when it comes to Driveways, it will either be 200mm, 250mm or 300mm square (at least from our range - some of our competitors offer variations on those sizes) - that's typically for a standard residential driveway, which it looks like will apply for yourselves - in the case of some of the larger properties, there's a 400mm x 400mm which can also be used. Normally, the rule of thumb for laying the job yourself, is really to knock yourself out and pick whatever colour & pattern(s) you like - in my opinion, a 200mm or 250mm square with a header course of 200mm x 100mm looks fantastic - but in doing it by yourself, you've got all the time you like to finish it. That being said, obviously the larger the paver, the less time it will take for the job to be done, so that should always be considered as well. Appreciate that Chippy. I won’t do sand under pavers and will connect all up under pavers, however I was going to do: 1) Roadbase compacted with manual hand tamper 2)… 10 18529 To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 9799 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.) Contraction joints are at 3m max for a 125 slab. Thanks 0 10892 |
