Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 20, 2012 3:55 pm Hi, I'd like to get opinions on putting insulation for noise between floors. We have upgraded to best underlay under the carpet on the top floor but wondering about soundproofing between the floors. I am also thinking the builder is overcharging at $2470 for batts... R3.0 soundscreen accoustic batts....does that seem pricey (our first floor is 155m squared or 16.77 squares). Need urgent replies please as this will be a variation as they have already started building Tks in advance. Re: soundproofing between floors 3Feb 20, 2012 9:15 pm I was thinking about it too, but did not do it cause I forgot lol Anyway tips: Make sure your plumbing pipes have those heavy laggings. (you may hear water come down when you shower or flush your toilet upstairs) Also if most of your family come down and go upstairs only to sleep you can get away with no soundproof? If they have a Zumba lesson upstairs then go for it Orchid 4200 with Burbank: Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53034 House Built in 7 Months and 2 weeks Re: soundproofing between floors 4Feb 20, 2012 11:08 pm Thanks for those thoughts James - and doublej, for putting things in perspective. You're right, in reality, we'll only go upstairs to sleep. The part that was scaring me was that you cant retrofit soundproofing between floors! I just wish I could hear from other people who have double storeys ....and whether or not they had soundproofing or are sorry they did not etc. Re: soundproofing between floors 5Feb 21, 2012 7:59 am Omg the house we are living in has nothing it's horrible. It's three story. Bedrooms and living area on all levels and it's floorboards. I hate it. It's so noisy there is never a moments peace. I would fork out. Re: soundproofing between floors 6Feb 21, 2012 8:02 am Spent many hours in a friends double storey without the sound proofing. It is very noisy. If I were to build a double storey this is something I would definitely do. Also note if you have downlights down stairs they may need to put those caps / void (which can transmit some noise). Saying that it will definitly stop alot of the noise Orchid 4200 with Burbank: Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53034 House Built in 7 Months and 2 weeks Re: soundproofing between floors 8Feb 21, 2012 8:52 pm dazandstace... is the upstairs floorboards or is it carpeted? I checked with the admin person and there is batts between the floors, but not soundproofing batts, just insulation batts... Does that change your opinion doublej? Does anyone know if I can put anything down before they put down the underlay eg. rubber matting? Sorry if I seem to be grasping at straws...I guess I am just loathe to pay out yet another $2500k.... Re: soundproofing between floors 9Feb 21, 2012 9:12 pm We are building a double storey home, it will be our 3rd two storey home, we have never had sound insulation and never had a problem with noise, we have always carpet upstairs. Dont get me wrong we hear noise occassionally but we arent elephants and it has never been a problem To be honest I didnt even know you could do it, but I certainly wouldnt be wasting my money on it Re: soundproofing between floors 10Feb 21, 2012 9:34 pm I'm with gogo, third double storey for us and no sound insulation so far. People who have it probably think it is worth it (maybe I don't know what I'm missing) but I think $2500 could be put to better use somewhere else. As far as I know, insulation batts really don't make any significant difference to noise at all. You need sound insulation batts for that!!!! Re: soundproofing between floors 11Feb 21, 2012 9:58 pm If you are going to pay $2.5K make sure the builder puts proper Acoustic Insulation, the Thermal Batts will not do much. http://tontineinsulation.com.au/products/acoustic http://www.bradfordinsulation.com.au/Pr ... ation.aspx Orchid 4200 with Burbank: Thread: https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=53034 House Built in 7 Months and 2 weeks Re: soundproofing between floors 12Feb 21, 2012 10:06 pm Tracey em It's my parents house we are living in both 2nd and 3 rd floor have floorboards and carpeted living areas. The noise is amplified to the floor below no matter what. I does sound like it travels through the walls aswell. Type of noise is not just loud voices or loud tv, I'm talking doors opening closing, kettle, footsteps, anything and everything you do you think isn't noisy and its causing major noise below. I can't stress enough how much you'll regret it if you don't. Sorry to be negative Re: soundproofing between floors 13Feb 21, 2012 10:52 pm Thank you all for your time and advice...As we're short on time, we're going to take half a days leave and pop out to the display home and stomp around upstairs and see what it sounds like! I am tending towards 'no soundproofing'...as we dont have kids at home anymore and we're not 'loud' by nature...!
